King Charles Celebrates Squadron’s Reformation at RAF Lossiemouth

King Charles III made a surprise visit to RAF Lossiemouth in Moray on August 30, 2023, where he celebrated the reformation of the Number 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron. The 76-year-old monarch received a warm welcome as he attended a special Stand-Up Parade, marking a significant moment for the squadron and its personnel.
Dressed in military uniform, the King addressed the assembled audience with a heartfelt speech. He highlighted the importance of the occasion, stating, “It gives me the greatest possible pleasure to be here with you all today to mark the standing up of 42 Torpedo Bomber Squadron, and to present you with your new Standard.” His remarks conveyed a deep connection to the site, as he reminisced about his own school days at Gordonstoun, which is located near the air station.
Connection to RAF Lossiemouth
Charles reflected on his past experiences, noting that RAF Lossiemouth has been a significant part of his life. He said, “I am especially pleased to be doing so here at R.A.F. Lossiemouth, the beating heart of the United Kingdom’s long-range maritime patrol aircraft capability, and an air station at the end of whose runway my old school, Gordonstoun, is situated!” The King’s memories included training sessions with personnel from the station during his time in the Cadet Corps, highlighting the longstanding relationship between the royal family and the RAF.
The event at RAF Lossiemouth comes just days after the King attended the Mey Highland Games in Caithness, further showcasing his commitment to public engagement. Following this engagement, King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to head to Balmoral for their annual summer break, a tradition that has been observed by the royal family for many years.
The visit not only served as a ceremonial occasion but also reinforced the monarchy’s connection to the armed forces. The King’s presence at such events underscores the importance of military heritage and the support that the royal family extends to service personnel across the UK.
As the festivities concluded, images from the King’s engagement highlighted the spirit of camaraderie and pride within the squadron. This event marks a significant milestone for the Number 42 Squadron as they embark on a new chapter under the royal standard.
