Newcastle’s Heart Unit Clinic Transformed to Support Young Patients
A significant refurbishment has taken place at Clinic E of the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, enhancing the experience for young patients and their families. This transformation, supported by funding from the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (Chuf) and the Newcastle Hospitals Charity, aims to create a more welcoming and calming environment.
The redesign of Clinic E introduces new artwork, colourful child-friendly features, and interactive screens in waiting areas. These enhancements are intended to distract and relax young patients during potentially stressful visits. Additionally, a sensory-friendly room has been established, remaining screen-free to accommodate children with additional needs.
Hospital staff, patients, and their families provided feedback on the improvements that would be most beneficial. One parent, Victoria Byrom, whose son Finn has received support from Chuf, expressed her enthusiasm for the changes. “It’s amazing to see how the refurbishment has transformed the space,” she stated, highlighting its positive impact on families.
Charlotte Campbell, director of fundraising and operations at Chuf, emphasized that Clinic E is a place where families often experience anxiety. “Creating a more welcoming space makes a real difference to how children and caregivers feel on the day. We’re very proud to have worked closely with Newcastle Hospitals Charity and the Clinic E team to make this happen,” she remarked.
The collaboration between the two charities showcases the power of teamwork in effecting meaningful change within healthcare settings. Kelly Belmont, charity programmes and partnerships manager at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, noted, “This project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when charities and hospital teams work together. The improvements will make a real difference to the experience of families visiting the clinic for years to come.”
Both Chuf and Newcastle Hospitals Charity are dedicated to funding NHS support that extends beyond what is typically covered through standard NHS provisions. They have expressed their gratitude to supporters for their donations and encouraged local businesses to consider partnerships to further their initiatives.
As of March 2024, the newly refurbished Clinic E is set to enhance the overall experience for young patients and their caregivers, making their visits to the Children’s Heart Unit more pleasant and less stressful.
