Nigerian Chef Sets World Record with 8,780 kg Jollof Rice

A Nigerian chef has officially set a new Guinness World Record for the largest serving of jollof rice, presenting an astonishing dish weighing 8,780 kg. On September 12, 2023, in Lagos, Hilda Baci, in collaboration with the brand Gino Nigeria, showcased the beloved West African dish in front of a vibrant audience of thousands.
Baci, who previously gained recognition for her remarkable cooking marathon that lasted nearly four days in 2023, described the record-breaking effort as a culmination of “nine hours of fire, passion, and teamwork.” The event required an impressive 1,200 kg of gas, illustrating the scale of the undertaking as they prepared 16,600 plates of jollof rice, which were served “with joy, love, and community.”
Cooking for the Community
The process attracted over 8,000 spectators, who gathered to witness the spectacle unfold. Baci and her team worked diligently to prepare the massive quantity of rice, emphasizing the communal spirit that defines the dish. After the extensive cooking session, the food was carefully divided into individual portions, ensuring that everyone in attendance could partake in the celebration.
Baci’s achievement not only showcases her culinary skills but also highlights the cultural significance of jollof rice in Nigeria and across West Africa. The dish is often a centerpiece at social gatherings and celebrations, symbolizing unity and festivity.
A Journey of Culinary Excellence
The record-breaking event is a testament to Baci’s dedication to her craft and her ambition to elevate Nigerian cuisine on a global stage. Her previous record for the longest cooking marathon drew attention for its endurance and skill, but this new milestone solidifies her status as a leader in the culinary world.
As Baci continues to inspire aspiring chefs and food enthusiasts, her latest achievement reflects the broader narrative of Nigerian cuisine gaining recognition worldwide. The event not only brings pride to her local community but also serves as a reminder of the power of food to connect people.
With this record, Hilda Baci has not only made her mark in the culinary world but has also united thousands in celebration of a dish that holds deep cultural roots. The success of the event reaffirms the importance of community and tradition in the culinary arts, making it a memorable chapter in the story of Nigerian gastronomy.
