Queen Camilla Launches Third Annual Reading Festival at Chatsworth

Royal fans are celebrating the return of the Queen’s Reading Room Festival, an event hailed as “inspirational” that is currently taking place at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. This year’s festival, running from September 19 to 20, marks its third iteration and features a remarkable lineup of acclaimed authors, literary experts, and actors, all coming together to promote a love for reading.
At a special reception held at the historic site, Queen Camilla welcomed a multitude of literary enthusiasts. The event also coincides with the 250th anniversary of famed author Jane Austen, whose work has inspired generations. Queen Camilla expressed her enthusiasm for the literary initiative, which aims to foster reading among young people.
Attendees took to social media to express their admiration for the Queen’s commitment to the initiative. One supporter wrote on X, “So important for the future care of little and growing minds. God bless Camilla on her quest for the betterment of an upcoming generation.” Another commented, “A wonderful initiative—books truly have the power to inspire, connect, and transform lives. Lovely to see Her Majesty championing the joy of reading.”
During her speech at Chatsworth House, Queen Camilla remarked on the significance of the venue, stating, “It seems only fitting that, in the 250th anniversary year of Jane Austen’s birth, we are reminded that this magnificent backdrop was her inspiration for Pemberley in Pride and Prejudice.” She playfully referenced a famous scene from a BBC adaptation of Austen’s work, suggesting that Lord William Burlington, chairman of The Chatsworth House Trust, might consider reenacting it.
The Queen’s Reading Room initiative, which began as a modest Instagram book club during the pandemic, has evolved into a significant charity. Queen Camilla noted the growth of the community, which now comprises over 180,000 members and reaches an annual audience of 12 million people from 183 countries.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged,” she said, “that books make life better. They allow us to see through another’s eyes, comfort and encourage us, make us laugh, make us cry, and free us to travel the globe without stepping outside our front doors.”
Through events like the Queen’s Reading Room Festival, Queen Camilla continues to highlight the transformative power of literature in people’s lives, encouraging future generations to embrace the written word.
