Olivia Rodrigo Slams DHS Over Unauthorized Use of Her Song
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo recently found herself at the center of a heated dispute with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after the agency used her song “All American B*tch” in a controversial promotional video. The video, which advocated for the self-deportation of undocumented immigrants, sparked outrage from the singer, who publicly condemned the government’s actions.
In a now-deleted Instagram comment, Rodrigo expressed her discontent with a straightforward message: “don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” This statement led to a warning from a DHS spokesperson, escalating the situation into a public clash over artistic expression and political issues.
The DHS response was strikingly pointed, seemingly referencing Rodrigo’s own lyrics. In a statement to The Mirror US, the spokesperson remarked, “America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We suggest Ms. Rodrigo thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.” This exchange highlighted the increasingly polarized political climate in the United States, particularly regarding immigration policy.
Rodrigo’s song “All American B*tch” features a chorus that sarcastically states, “All the time. I’m grateful all the time.” By invoking these lyrics in their response, the government appeared to mock the artist while simultaneously defending its stance on immigration.
This incident is not the first time Rodrigo has voiced her opposition to the Trump administration’s use of her music. In 2024, she reacted similarly when the official Team Trump TikTok account used her song “deja vu.” Rodrigo commented at the time, “ew don’t use my sound ever again ty,” clearly stating that the usage was unauthorized.
Rodrigo has consistently leveraged her platform to advocate for progressive causes. She has been vocal about her opposition to the rise of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles, where she has lived her entire life. In a previous Instagram Story, she expressed her distress over the deportations of her neighbors, asserting, “LA simply wouldn’t exist without immigrants.” She emphasized the need for empathy, stating, “Treating hardworking community members with such little respect, empathy, and due process is awful.”
As part of her commitment to advocacy, Rodrigo founded the charity 4 good, which aims to support women’s rights and education. In 2024, she donated $2 million raised from her tour to this foundation, which funds local nonprofits that promote girls’ education and reproductive rights.
Rodrigo has also been a prominent supporter of Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. The Vice President shared a photo with the singer to promote vaccination efforts, cleverly referencing Rodrigo’s hit song by stating, “and I agree, vaccines—they’re ‘good 4 u.’”
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Olivia Rodrigo remains a powerful voice for the younger generation, using her artistry and influence to advocate for change. This latest incident with the DHS underscores the ongoing tensions between celebrity activism and governmental authority.
