Study Reveals Nutri-Score Fails to Reflect Cocoa’s Nutritional Value
Research conducted at the University of Granada indicates that the Nutri-Score labeling system, widely used across Europe, inadequately represents the nutritional quality of soluble cocoa products sold in Spain. The study highlights the complexities surrounding the nutritional and metabolic properties of soluble cocoa, suggesting that current labeling practices may mislead consumers.
The investigation employed advanced non-targeted metabolomics techniques to analyze a total of 54 products from 19 different brands, which bore Nutri-Score ratings ranging from A to D. This comprehensive analysis aimed to assess whether the Nutri-Score could accurately reflect the true nutritional profile of these cocoa products.
Researchers found that the Nutri-Score system does not take into account the intricate nutritional components and health benefits associated with cocoa. This shortcoming raises significant concerns about the effectiveness of the Nutri-Score in guiding consumer choices, particularly in a market where health-conscious decisions are increasingly common.
The study’s findings point to a growing need for the re-evaluation of food labeling systems to ensure they provide a clearer understanding of product quality. The researchers emphasized that a more nuanced approach to labeling could better inform consumers about the nutritional value of cocoa and similar products.
