Dallas Cowboys Honor Late Teammate Marshawn Kneeland with Tributes
The Dallas Cowboys are set to honor their late teammate, Marshawn Kneeland, who tragically passed away on November 2, 2023. Kneeland died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase, an event that deeply affected the team and its community. In remembrance of their teammate, the Cowboys will implement several tributes throughout the remainder of the season.
To pay homage to Kneeland, the Cowboys will wear helmet decals for the rest of the year. The final design of these decals will be decided by Kneeland’s teammates, reflecting their personal connection to him. Additionally, special T-shirts will be worn before the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders and during the game on November 23, 2023, against the Philadelphia Eagles. This match will mark the Cowboys’ first home game at AT&T Stadium since Kneeland’s passing.
In a show of respect, the Cowboys will observe a moment of silence and present a video tribute to Kneeland before the game against the Eagles. Other tributes are also planned, ensuring that Kneeland’s memory is honored both on and off the field. These announcements follow the team’s return to their training facility, known as The Star, for the first time since the incident.
The Cowboys organization has made mental health resources available to players, coaches, and staff during this challenging time. Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president, expressed the profound impact of Kneeland’s death during an interview on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Certainly, it puts everything into perspective,” Jones stated. “You’re playing a game that means a lot to a lot of people, but there are things a lot more important than that.”
Kneeland, who was just 24 years old, was drafted as the Cowboys’ second-round pick in 2024 from Western Michigan University. His untimely death has left a significant void within the team and its supporters. Following the tragic news, Jones reflected on the emotional toll of such incidents, stating, “Anytime you get news like that your heart just, obviously, it’s like a hole going through it and you’re just heartbroken.”
As the Cowboys prepare to honor Marshawn Kneeland in the upcoming games, the organization and its fans continue to remember his contributions both on and off the field. The planned tributes serve not only as a memorial to a young athlete’s life but also as a reminder of the importance of mental health and community support in the world of sports.
