Vlatko Gilić: Documentary Filmmaker Explores the Essence of Humanity
Vlatko Gilić, a rising star in the world of documentary filmmaking, has gained significant recognition in both Yugoslavia and internationally. Despite being in his thirties and having directed only six short films, Gilić has captivated audiences and critics alike. His accolades include multiple awards at the Belgrade festival, where he won the Golden Medal in 1970 for “Zategni dele,” the Grand Prix in 1971 for “In continuo,” and another Golden Medal in 1972 for “Dan više.” He has also received the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and a special recognition award at Oberhausen for his trilogy comprising “In continuo,” “Juda,” and “Dan više.”
In an interview conducted during the Belgrade festival and later completed in Titograd, Gilić opened up about his artistic vision and the thematic depth of his films.
Exploring the Human Condition
Gilić’s films consistently address the human experience and the individual’s relationship with the world. “Without humanity, my films would not exist,” he explained. “My creativity is directed entirely at the human being. This ongoing quest to understand humanity drives my work.” He described how he feels compelled to delve deeper into the human psyche each time he embarks on a new project.
The filmmaker acknowledged that while he often feels he has grasped a part of human essence, it frequently eludes him, prompting a continuous journey of exploration. “Every time I think I’ve found it, I realize it slips away again, and I must search anew,” Gilić remarked. This relentless pursuit fuels his passion for filmmaking.
Layers of Meaning in Film
Gilić’s work is characterized by multiple layers of meaning, with aspects of the metaphysical and mythological frequently emerging. He elaborated, “During the creative process, I encounter thought streams that strive to unify into something essential.” He believes that the mysterious elements in art contribute to its timelessness, allowing it to resonate across various eras.
His film “Juda” illustrates his thematic focus by depicting the coexistence of humans and snakes in Velebit. Gilić emphasized that while the film may appear to be about snakes, its core message revolves around the human struggle against evil. “In ‘Juda,’ the protagonist grapples with evil that surrounds him, emphasizing the internal conflict that mirrors his external battles,” he stated.
Gilić articulated that the struggle against evil is essential to human nature, revealing that the battle with the external forces is often less challenging than the fight within. For him, these conflicts encapsulate the essence of human existence.
In discussing “Dan više,” Gilić noted its connection to “Juda,” stating that both films reflect the human fight against adversity. “In ‘Dan više’, I explore the idea of perseverance, emphasizing that moments of defeat do not equate to surrender,” he explained. The film’s title reflects the notion of survival, reinforcing the idea that the will to live encompasses every aspect of life.
Gilić shared his concern that audiences might not fully grasp the essence of his films. However, the positive reception, including prolonged applause from viewers, reassured him of his success in conveying these profound themes. “It felt as though the audience connected deeply with the emotional weight carried by the characters,” he said.
He emphasized the responsibility of artists to confront the evil that exists in society. “An artist must strive to break the ceiling of malevolence that looms above us,” Gilić stated, highlighting the imperative to address societal issues through the medium of film.
Through his innovative storytelling and thought-provoking themes, Vlatko Gilić continues to make a significant impact in the realm of documentary filmmaking, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression while seeking to illuminate the complexities of human existence.
