Wayne Rooney Critiques Mo Salah After Liverpool’s 3-0 Loss to City
Liverpool faced a challenging defeat against Manchester City on October 29, 2023, ending the match with a score of 3-0. The loss drew significant attention to the performance of Liverpool’s star forward, Mohamed Salah, particularly from former player Wayne Rooney, who expressed concerns regarding Salah’s defensive contributions during the game.
The match at Anfield saw City dominate play, with goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez, and Jeremy Doku securing their victory. Although Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk had a goal controversially disallowed, it was evident that City controlled the tempo and flow of the match. Rooney pointed out that Salah’s lack of defensive involvement allowed Doku to exploit the left flank, creating persistent challenges for Liverpool’s full-back, Conor Bradley.
Rooney Calls for Teamwork from Salah
Analyzing the game on the program “Match of the Day,” Rooney emphasized that Salah’s primary role is to score and assist but highlighted the need for players to support their teammates defensively in crucial matches. “Salah is in the team to score goals and create goals,” Rooney stated. “But in big games, you have to double up. You have to get back and help your teammate.”
Bradley struggled to contain Doku, who consistently found space and caused problems for Liverpool’s defense. Rooney noted that while teammate Ryan Gravenberch attempted to assist Bradley, it left gaps elsewhere in the formation. Rooney remarked, “I think Salah has to come back and help his teammate,” illustrating a broader concern about teamwork and defensive accountability.
This criticism is not new for Salah, as Rooney previously questioned his work rate after Liverpool’s loss to Chelsea in October 2023. Rooney’s observations suggest that while Salah has been a standout player in the Premier League over the past several years, his recent performances have raised doubts about his commitment to defensive responsibilities.
City’s Strategy to Contain Salah
Manchester City’s head coach, Pep Guardiola, also discussed his team’s strategy for handling Salah. Following the match, he revealed that his players had prepared for aggressive defensive tactics specifically aimed at limiting Salah’s impact. “Salah has been a nightmare for many years,” Guardiola explained. “It helped that whenever Mo had the ball we had three or four players around him.”
Guardiola’s comments underscore the significance of effective game planning in high-stakes matches. The City defense was particularly effective in the first half, stifling Salah’s usual offensive threat and leaving Liverpool searching for answers.
As Liverpool reflects on this defeat, questions about the team’s dynamics and individual performances, particularly from Salah and Wirtz, will surely dominate discussions. With the Premier League season continuing, it remains to be seen how Liverpool will adapt and respond to these challenges in future fixtures.
