Ronovo Surgical Secures $67 Million to Expand Carina Robot Globally
Ronovo Surgical has successfully secured $67 million in a funding round aimed at enhancing its global presence for the Carina robotic surgery platform. This investment reflects a growing interest in surgical technology, particularly as demand for minimally invasive procedures continues to rise among healthcare providers worldwide. The Carina system, designed for various surgical specialties, is already gaining traction in China’s expanding healthcare market.
The latest funding round, which included contributions from notable investors such as Johnson & Johnson Innovation, marks a pivotal moment for Ronovo Surgical. While the company made significant strides in 2023 with funding and product launches, it previously lacked formal partnerships with multinational healthcare organizations. The introduction of the Carina platform in February 2023 initiated discussions about its versatility and local regulatory approvals, but plans for international expansion were not fully realized until this recent agreement.
Series D Funding and Future Growth
With the addition of this Series D financing, Ronovo’s total funding has now exceeded $100 million. Alongside Johnson & Johnson, other investors such as Lilly Asia Ventures, INCE Capital, and Granite Asia have demonstrated renewed confidence in Ronovo’s growth potential. These funds will primarily support the commercialization of the Carina platform, especially in China, where recent regulatory approvals have set a strong foundation for distribution.
As part of this financing agreement, Ronovo has entered into a collaboration with Johnson & Johnson MedTech. This partnership is designed to integrate the Carina platform with established J&J technologies in selected hospitals across China. By aligning with a prominent global healthcare provider, Ronovo aims to enhance the adoption of Carina, combining its innovative design with J&J’s trusted surgical tools.
Innovative Features of the Carina Platform
The Carina platform received approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration in March 2025, becoming the first modular surgical robotic system in the country cleared for general surgery, gynecology, urology, and thoracic surgery. Its flexible design allows surgeons to customize instrument selections and access approaches tailored for minimally invasive procedures. This modularity not only streamlines operating room efficiency but also aims to make robotic surgery more accessible across various healthcare settings.
Ronovo has initiated regulatory submissions in Europe and South America, signaling its intent to extend its reach beyond China. While these international expansion efforts are in the early stages, the company is committed to aligning its product offerings with regional healthcare needs and establishing distributor networks.
The recent funding positions Ronovo Surgical to compete more effectively in the global surgical robotics market. The Carina platform’s distinguishing characteristics, such as its modularity and adaptable instrument selection, are expected to reduce barriers to adoption for hospitals. As the landscape of medical devices evolves, stakeholders can anticipate ongoing updates regarding regulatory advancements, new partnerships, and the Carina platform’s impact on surgical accessibility, particularly in regions with limited access to robotic surgery.
As healthcare providers assess innovative modular systems, developments like Ronovo’s funding and collaborations present valuable opportunities for enhancing surgical outcomes and economic feasibility in an increasingly competitive environment.
