Two Charged with Murder After Elderly Couple Dies in Arson Fire

A tragic incident in St Helens has led to the deaths of two elderly residents and the subsequent arrest of multiple suspects. Eric Greener, aged 77, and Sheila Jackson, aged 83, succumbed to injuries sustained during an arson attack on their home on South John Street in July. The police have confirmed that the fire was deliberately set, with accelerants used to intensify the flames.
On September 16, 2023, two additional individuals were charged in connection with this devastating event. Kevin Weetman, 34, from Croxteth Drive, Aigburth, and Kylie Maynard, 37, from Rydal Street, Everton, now face several serious charges. These include two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and arson, as well as conspiracy to supply a class A drug, specifically cocaine. Both Weetman and Maynard have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on September 17, 2023.
In a related development, Lee Owens, aged 46 and with no fixed address, has already been charged with two counts of murder and arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody and is expected to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on November 28, 2023.
The investigation into this case has been extensive, with police reporting that seven other individuals have also been arrested as part of the ongoing inquiry. Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath emphasized the importance of community cooperation during this investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward.
In his statement, McGrath said, “The investigation is progressing and two more people have now been charged in connection with this incident. I would like to take this opportunity to remind people that this is a live investigation and to be mindful that anything posted or shared on social media could jeopardise proceedings.”
Authorities have set up multiple channels for the public to share information. Individuals can visit the dedicated web page for the investigation or contact Merseyside Police directly on social media @MerPolCC. For those wishing to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers can be reached at 0800 555 111.
