Ilkay Gundogan Reflects on Manchester City’s Tough Season Before Transfer

Ilkay Gundogan bid farewell to Manchester City after a challenging season, reflecting on the team’s journey back to their “highest standard” of play. Following a difficult campaign, which saw City narrowly secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, Gundogan now embarks on a new chapter with Galatasaray.
The 34-year-old midfielder played a pivotal role in assisting his team recover from a turbulent start to the season. City aimed to defend their Premier League title but faced significant struggles, leading to questions about their form. Despite criticism throughout the year, Gundogan’s consistent performance helped trigger an automatic one-year contract extension.
Gundogan’s impact became particularly evident in the second half of the season. In the 12 matches he started, City won 10 and drew two, while they managed only one win and three defeats in the games he did not feature. This stark contrast left Gundogan feeling proud as he transitions away from the Etihad Stadium, despite his expectation to remain with the team.
After returning from a season with Barcelona, Gundogan felt he still had much to contribute under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola. Yet, he found himself sidelined during the first three matches of the new season. Ultimately, he departed just after the transfer deadline, coinciding with the Turkish transfer window remaining open.
In an emotional farewell letter to fans published in the Manchester Evening News, Gundogan celebrated his time with the club and the deep connections he formed within the local community. He expressed gratitude for the experiences he gained at City, especially during one of the toughest seasons of his career.
Reflecting on the past year, Gundogan stated, “I think it was one of the most difficult seasons; probably where we ended the season on the table also kind of reflects that. But going through all these difficulties together as a group and coming out of them still in a positive way is significant.”
He highlighted a notable statistic: City went undefeated in their last eight matches of the previous season, securing six wins and two draws. “At the end of the season, we were on it again,” he said, emphasizing the importance of rediscovering their rhythm. Gundogan noted that the team found balance, “and it felt like it clicked again.”
He acknowledged the value of the challenges faced, remarking, “Going through the struggles just makes all the achievements sweeter and better.” Gundogan also emphasized the quality of football played towards the season’s end, which ultimately secured their place in the Champions League.
As Gundogan steps into a new role with Galatasaray, Manchester City faces the task of maintaining the consistency they displayed late last season. The club will need to build on their strengths to avoid further disappointments in upcoming competitions.
