Julia Bradbury Opens Up About Cancer Journey and Lifestyle Change

Julia Bradbury, the well-known presenter of the BBC show Countryfile, has spoken candidly about her battle with breast cancer and the significant lifestyle changes she has made since her diagnosis. At age 55, Bradbury was diagnosed during the COVID-19 lockdown and underwent a single mastectomy in 2021 to remove a tumour.

In her ongoing journey toward health, Bradbury has completely eliminated alcohol from her life. She acknowledges that this decision can frustrate some people, stating, “I get a lot of pushback on social media about this.” During a conversation with The Times, she revealed that medical professionals warned her that consuming alcohol beyond a certain threshold significantly increases the risk of cancer recurrence. Reflecting on her experiences, she confessed, “death looked me in the eyes.”

Prioritising Health and Family

Bradbury emphasized the importance of prioritising her health following her diagnosis. She explained, “If I drink more than four units of alcohol a week, my risk of recurrence goes up by 28 percent.” This revelation has shifted her perspective on life, prompting her to focus more on emotional well-being, sleep, and spending quality time with loved ones.

The impact of her medical situation has been profound, affecting both her self-confidence and financial stability. She shared, “I am very, very fortunate, and overall, I’m having a wonderful life. But I’ve had a cancer diagnosis, both my parents have had cancer, I’ve lost people along the way, I’ve had financial worries, I’ve had to reinvent myself, and I’m not 100 percent happy all of the time.”

Bradbury’s reflections extend to her demanding career, where she questions whether her relentless schedule is sustainable. She recounted a conversation with a doctor who advised her that her drive could be detrimental: “You’re running on a credit card. You can push through all sorts of things. But is that the best thing for you?”

Life After Cancer

Now cancer-free, Bradbury maintains regular medical check-ups each year. She stated, “I wasn’t close to death, but death looked me in the eyes. So I am more focused on my health than I ever have been.” Her commitment to wellness includes a daily exercise routine and a healthy diet. She is determined to spend time outdoors, reinforcing this commitment even during the challenging winter months.

Family life is also a priority for Bradbury, who cherishes her time with her three children: Zephyr, aged 13, and her 10-year-old twin daughters, Xanthe and Zena. She remarked, “I really revel in being present with them and doing things with them that are nourishing and enriching.” For her, the joy lies in simple moments spent together, reinforcing the importance of family connections.

Bradbury’s career has spanned various roles, from being GMTV’s correspondent in Los Angeles to hosting prime-time shows such as Watchdog. Her experiences have shaped her understanding of balance in life, particularly following her cancer diagnosis. Now, she advocates for a life that prioritizes health and connection over relentless ambition.
