Man Released on Bail After Alleged Racially Aggravated Rape

Police in the West Midlands are appealing for public assistance following the release on bail of a man arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a British-born Sikh woman in what has been described as a racially aggravated attack. The incident occurred on the morning of September 9, 2023, as the woman, in her 20s, was on her way to work in Oldbury.
The victim reported that she was assaulted by two white men who allegedly told her, “You don’t belong in this country, get out,” during the attack, which took place between 08:00 and 08:30. A man in his 30s was apprehended on September 10, but has since been released on bail while investigations continue, according to West Midlands Police.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
Authorities are actively pursuing leads, reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, and conducting extensive forensic inquiries. Officers are particularly keen to speak with anyone who may have seen two men in the vicinity around the time of the attack. Descriptions have been provided: one man reportedly had a shaved head, a heavy build, and was wearing gloves and a dark sweatshirt, while the second was dressed in a grey top with a silver zip.
Chief Superintendent Kim Madill, the police commander for Sandwell, stated, “We are working closely with key partners and we absolutely understand the concern of local people.” She emphasized the necessity of public cooperation to gather information on the perpetrators of this serious crime. “I can reassure you that we are doing everything possible to bring those responsible to justice on this young woman’s behalf,” Madill added.
Community Response and Vigil
In response to the attack, more than 450 Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations across the UK have united to express their disappointment regarding the pace of the investigation. They have sent a letter to Keir Starmer, urging him to encourage government officials to address rising anti-Sikh hate crimes. The letter highlights an increase in racially motivated attacks and calls for urgent action from the new Home Secretary and Communities Secretary.
On the evening of September 12, a vigil was held, attended by hundreds of community members who sought to support the victim. Organiser Salman Mirza remarked, “We feel there’s been a rise in racism and we want unity because we believe this is a good area.” He noted concerns regarding division in the community, particularly in light of recent protests and rising tensions.
The victim, in her statement, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from her community, stating, “I would never wish this on anyone. All I was doing was going about my day on my way to work, and what has happened has deeply affected us.” She acknowledged her family and community as pillars of strength during this challenging time.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in ensuring justice for the victim and addressing broader issues of hate and violence.
