Manuel Akanji Joins Inter Milan on Loan with Permanent Option

Manuel Akanji has officially joined Inter Milan on a loan deal from Manchester City, with the potential for a permanent transfer next summer. The Swiss defender’s move follows a period of reduced playing time at the Etihad Stadium, prompting this shift to the Serie A club.
The agreement includes an option for Inter to buy Akanji for €15 million (approximately £13 million) if they secure the Serie A title and he participates in at least 50% of their league matches. This arrangement reflects both clubs’ strategic interests, with Akanji seeking more playing opportunities while Manchester City looks to manage their squad size.
Interest in Akanji had been high, with several clubs, including Galatasaray, Tottenham, and AC Milan, inquiring about his availability. Despite this interest, Akanji was not actively seeking a transfer, as City was prepared to retain him if no suitable offers arose. Ultimately, Inter’s approach on the loan deadline appealed to Akanji, who is drawn to the prospect of competing in both Serie A and the Champions League.
### City’s Squad Adjustments
Akanji’s departure is part of a broader strategy by Manchester City to reduce their squad size. Manager Pep Guardiola prefers a streamlined roster, especially given the constraints regarding non-homegrown players for their Champions League registration. Akanji’s exit follows that of goalkeeper Ederson, which helps the club comply with roster limitations.
With the arrival of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to replace Ederson, City finds itself slightly above the necessary player limit once again. However, the expected transfer of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to Galatasaray should alleviate this situation, allowing City to finalize their Champions League squad. City is set to announce their Champions League roster this week ahead of their opening match against Napoli at the Etihad Stadium later this month.
Akanji has been an integral part of City’s squad since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, contributing to their success over the past three seasons. His recent lack of playing time, including being left out of the matchday squad for City’s recent home loss to Tottenham and remaining an unused substitute in their other fixtures, made this move timely for both him and the club.
As the football season progresses, Akanji’s performance at Inter will be closely watched, especially with the potential of a permanent transfer on the horizon, contingent upon his contributions to the team’s success in Serie A.
