Netheridge Swing Bridge Reopens After Controversial Closure

The Netheridge Swing Bridge in Gloucester has reopened following a significant closure that lasted 12 days, which many locals deemed poorly timed. The bridge, located on Secunda Way in Hempsted, was shut on September 1, 2023, coinciding with the return to school after the summer holidays. It reopened slightly ahead of schedule on September 12, 2023, providing relief to motorists who had faced lengthy delays and a 7.5-mile official diversion.

Repair work on the bridge began on May 27, 2023, and was initially expected to conclude by May 31. Due to various operational issues, the completion date was pushed to June 3. Unfortunately, delays continued throughout the summer before the project resumed and was finally completed.

Local residents expressed frustration over the timing of the repairs. One individual remarked, “Had the whole of the summer holidays to finish the repair and thought the first school week of the new term would be the best time to start—absolute muppets.” Another commenter noted, “You had the entire summer to sort it but thought it was a good idea to do it when school reopened.”

Concerns were also raised about the impact of the closure on local businesses. A resident stated, “Hate to think what detrimental damage it’s done to businesses the past two weeks as well. Absolute chaos. Kudos to the bright spark that decided to do it the first week schools go back and not in school holidays when traffic is less busy.”

In response to the reopening, the Canal and River Trust, which oversees the bridge, issued a statement. “We’re pleased to share that Netheridge Swing Bridge on Secunda Way has reopened slightly ahead of the current schedule of midnight [September 12],” the statement read. The Trust acknowledged the disruption caused by the closure and expressed gratitude for the community’s patience during the repair period.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused—especially to residents and businesses in Hempsted and surrounding areas who felt the impact most,” the statement continued. “Your resilience and cooperation have meant a great deal to our teams working around the clock to complete the repairs safely and swiftly. Thank you again for bearing with us. We’re committed to keeping Gloucestershire moving safely and smoothly.”

While the bridge is now operational, some residents remain skeptical about its condition. One person expressed concern, saying, “Won’t be long and it will be shut again. Tarmac feels terrible to drive across.”

As the community adjusts to the reopening of the bridge, many are left contemplating the management of infrastructure repairs and their timing, particularly during peak traffic periods.
