Royal Mail Launches Stamps Honoring British Steam Locomotives

Royal Mail has announced the release of a new collection of stamps dedicated to the heritage of British steam locomotives. This set celebrates the pioneering development of the United Kingdom’s railway network, featuring ten iconic locomotives that have significantly influenced rail travel in Britain. Among the highlighted locomotives are the historic Locomotion No. 1, the Rocket, the Mallard, and the Evening Star.
As part of this commemorative release, Royal Mail will also issue a miniature sheet containing four stamps. This special sheet marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, an important milestone in railway history. The collaboration for this stamp series involved close partnership with the National Railway Museum and Darlington Council.
Celebrating a Legacy
David Gold, the director of external affairs and policy at Royal Mail, expressed enthusiasm for the release, stating, “To coincide with the 200th anniversary of the modern railway, Royal Mail is releasing a set of stamps honouring Britain’s enduring legacy of steam locomotion. This stamp issue captures the spirit of an era that transformed travel and trade forever.”
Craig Bentley, director at the National Railway Museum, also shared his excitement about the collaboration. “We are delighted to have collaborated with Royal Mail to develop this special set of stamps with images of these iconic steam locomotives, and to share with the nation in this celebration of railway history,” he said.
Mike Crawshaw, head of heritage and culture at Darlington Borough Council, added to the sentiment, noting, “We are truly honoured and thrilled with these commemorative stamps that celebrate the importance of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR). They beautifully capture the spirit and significance of the S&DR and Locomotion No. 1, and we’re proud to see this moment celebrated in such a meaningful and lasting way.”
Availability and Collectibles
The stamps and a range of related collectible products will be available for pre-order starting Thursday and will go on general sale from September 25, 2023. This release promises to appeal not only to stamp collectors but also to enthusiasts of railway history and British heritage.
With this initiative, Royal Mail aims to commemorate the role of steam locomotives in shaping transport and trade in the UK, while also engaging the public in celebrating an important chapter of British history.
