Search Intensifies for Missing British Teen Near Dracula’s Castle

Rescue teams in Romania are urgently searching for George Smyth, an 18-year-old British teenager who disappeared near Dracula’s Castle. After calling for help on the evening of November 23, 2023, he reported feeling exhausted and suffering from hypothermia. His mother, Jo Smyth, has traveled to Romania to assist in the search and has urged anyone with information to come forward.

The alert for George was issued by the Salvamont Brasov rescue service on the night of his disappearance. The organization released his photograph and a plea for public assistance. Despite extensive search efforts over the following days, harsh winter conditions have severely hampered operations, making the task increasingly challenging.

George reportedly set off from Poiana Brasov on the morning of November 23, intending to hike to the village of Bran, known for its connection to Bram Stoker’s legendary character, Count Dracula. Initial investigations indicated that he reached the Tiganesti Valley, where he made the distress call to the emergency services. Rescuers noted that he was in an advanced state of fatigue when he requested help, prompting an overnight search that yielded no results.

As the search progressed, rescuers found a rucksack containing supplies in the vicinity of his last known location. The bag has since been turned over to local police, but further evidence of George’s whereabouts remains elusive. His mother expressed her concern, stating, “He left his university in the United Kingdom on Sunday without telling us, to go hiking alone. His phone last had a signal in a remote mountain area.”

Salvamont Brasov officials reported that the operation has faced significant challenges due to the severe winter weather in the Bucegi Mountains, part of the high Carpathian range. This time of year typically brings rapidly changing weather conditions, including sudden fog, freezing winds, and unstable snow. Hypothermia can occur within minutes for hikers unprotected from the elements.

The planned hiking route from Poiana Brasov to Bran features long, wooded trails that ascend sharply into high-altitude sections, which become particularly dangerous during late-autumn cold snaps. Despite ongoing efforts, including the deployment of a Black Hawk helicopter for the first time in local rescue operations, search teams have not found any new leads since George’s initial call for help.

As the search continues, the situation remains critical. Rescuers are conducting operations in line with weather developments and maintaining a focus on operational safety. The hope is that renewed public awareness and support will lead to new information that could assist in locating George Smyth.
