CDC Faces Chaos as Hundreds of Employees Are Laid Off and Rehired

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been thrown into disarray following the mass firing of hundreds of employees, only for many to be reinstated after the agency admitted the layoffs were due to an “error.” These events unfolded against a backdrop of turmoil within the public health agency, which has faced significant challenges over the past ten months under the administration of former President Donald Trump.
In a move described by critics as a reckless attempt to downsize, the Trump administration issued “reduction in force” notices to over 1,000 CDC employees just before a three-day holiday weekend. According to court documents, approximately 1,200 workers at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) were affected, with many classified as “non-essential” by their divisions. This included crucial personnel such as “disease detectives,” outbreak forecasters, and researchers studying emerging infectious diseases.
As the chaos unfolded, the union representing federal workers reported that more than half of the termination notices were rescinded over the weekend. The rapid reversal raised concerns about the agency’s operational stability and the implications for public health.
Public Health Experts Raise Alarms
The turmoil at the CDC has prompted strong reactions from health officials and public health experts. Demetre Daskalakis, a former director at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, likened the experience of working at the CDC to “living with an abusive partner.” He emphasized that the damage inflicted on the agency goes beyond the rescinded firings, stating, “U.S. health security is compromised.”
Among those whose firings were reversed are critical staff members involved in monitoring outbreaks of diseases such as measles and Ebola, as well as the team responsible for the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The situation was further complicated by the mismanagement of staff, as Athalia Christie, who is overseeing the response to measles outbreaks, was reportedly fired in error for the second time this year.
A coalition of public health workers, known as Defend Public Health, expressed grave concerns, stating that the mass firings and confusion threaten the health of the population and could lead to “needless, preventable deaths.” Gregg Gonsalves, a CDC official, criticized the administration’s handling of these life-and-death matters, questioning whether officials were aware of the implications of terminating staff responsible for tracking infectious diseases.
Government Shutdown Exacerbates the Crisis
The mass layoffs coincided with a prolonged government shutdown, which has now entered its third week. The American Federation of Government Employees, led by President Everett Kelley, condemned the administration’s actions, asserting that it is “disgraceful” to use the shutdown as a means to unlawfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential services across the country.
The latest cuts at the CDC come amid a series of controversial decisions under the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has faced criticism for his views on vaccines and public health. His tenure has been marred by mass layoffs, significant funding reductions for research, and the dismissal of key advisory panels. The ongoing turmoil has left the CDC struggling to maintain its vital functions at a time when public health is more critical than ever.
Administration officials have indicated that the layoffs are part of broader cuts across federal agencies, particularly those deemed “Democrat-oriented.” The White House budget director, Russell Vought, announced that these reductions, referred to as “RIFs,” are permanent job cuts, affecting thousands of federal employees.
During a Senate Finance Committee hearing, Kennedy defended the administration’s actions, claiming the need to remove officials with “conflicts of interest” and to ensure that public health science remains free from political agendas. He stated, “We need unbiased, politics-free, transparent, evidence-based science in the public interest.”
As the CDC grapples with the fallout from these firings and the ongoing government shutdown, public health advocates continue to call for immediate reforms to safeguard the agency’s integrity and effectiveness. With the health of millions at stake, the consequences of these decisions will be felt for years to come.
