Montenegro Honors Late Metropolitan Amfilohije with Highest State Order

Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović announced the posthumous awarding of the highest state order to the late Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, marking the fifth anniversary of his passing. This honor reflects Amfilohije’s significant impact on the spiritual and social life of Montenegro during his nearly three-decade tenure at the helm of the Metropolitanate.
Born in 1938 in the village of Barama Radovića in the Donja Morača region, Amfilohije pursued extensive theological, religious, and philological studies in Belgrade, Bern, Rome, and Athens. According to President Milatović, his education positioned him as one of the most learned bishops in the Orthodox Church.
Milatović emphasized Amfilohije’s considerable influence in the Christian world, which contributed to enhancing Montenegro’s international reputation. During a pivotal moment in the country’s history—specifically the 2006 referendum on independence—Amfilohije’s calls for unity and mutual respect played a crucial role in ensuring a peaceful transition, helping Montenegro navigate the process without conflict.
In his later years, Amfilohije emerged as a symbol of spiritual resistance, particularly during 2019 and 2020, when he led large public gatherings opposing the Law on Freedom of Religion. These gatherings quickly gained broader societal significance, evolving into a symbol of peaceful civil resistance.
Milatović noted that the scale and duration of these gatherings were key factors contributing to the peaceful change of a long-standing government. He asserted that this shift has paved the way for Montenegro to pursue full membership in the European Union.
By posthumously awarding the highest state honor to Metropolitan Amfilohije, Montenegro acknowledges his contributions to preserving spiritual traditions and fostering social peace during some of the most sensitive periods in its contemporary history. The recognition also underscores his role in improving the country’s international standing, a testament to his lasting legacy.
