Montenegro’s Government Urged to Address Violence and Xenophobia
The recent events in Podgorica have sparked significant concern and criticism regarding the government’s response to violence and xenophobia in Montenegro. According to Ivan Jovović, the president of Matica crnogorska, the reactions of the Montenegrin government following an isolated incident reflect a troubling diplomatic blunder that undermines national interests from multiple perspectives.
Jovović emphasized that the government’s reaction appears to be an attempt to cover up a much deeper issue. He pointed out that the country’s institutions, particularly in the security and judicial sectors, are facing a severe crisis. He stated, “These are not spontaneous events; they are orchestrated by foreign interests, supported by local political and parapolitical groups, and carried out by individuals with criminal backgrounds.”
The violence witnessed in Podgorica, which attracted global attention, was marked by attacks on foreign nationals and property. Jovović criticized the government for failing to individualize and sanction unlawful behavior, which he argues has allowed extremist messages to proliferate in Montenegro. He warned that such a permissive environment legitimizes violence and normalizes it in everyday life.
Jovović’s comments reflect a broader concern among Montenegrin civil society regarding the state’s ability to protect its citizens and uphold the rule of law. He called for the government to adopt a more proactive stance against all forms of violence and to hold accountable those responsible for fostering a climate of fear and intolerance.
In light of these developments, the government faces increasing pressure to implement effective measures to combat violence and xenophobia. Critics argue that without decisive action, the situation could worsen, further eroding public trust in national institutions and jeopardizing the safety of both citizens and visitors.
As Montenegro navigates this challenging landscape, the need for accountability and a commitment to human rights become more pressing. The international community is watching closely, and the government’s response will be crucial in determining the future of social cohesion in the region.
