Liz Truss Critiques Keir Starmer’s Patriotism in Heated Exchange

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss has sharply criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer, claiming he embodies a strand of left-wing thinking that “hates” Britain. In an interview on the Daily Expresso news show, Truss responded to Starmer’s assertion that the Labour Party represents the “patriotic party” and his support for flying the England flag.

Truss described Starmer’s position as “a joke,” arguing that his political leanings align with those who favor international institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union, rather than prioritizing national interests. “Keir Starmer lecturing people about being unpatriotic is a joke,” she stated. “He comes from a long line of the left that think that way.”

The exchange comes amid heightened political tensions, as Starmer recently accused Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, of being “unpatriotic.” Farage had made comments to a US Congressional committee, suggesting that free speech is under threat in the UK. Truss echoed these concerns, pointing to the controversial arrest of Graham Linehan, a writer for the popular television show Father Ted. Linehan was detained at Heathrow Airport by five armed officers due to comments made on social media. The Metropolitan Police later confirmed that no further action would be taken against him.

Truss emphasized that incidents like Linehan’s arrest reflect a genuine threat to free speech in the UK. “People overseas think, ‘What the hell is going on in Britain? Why are comedians arrested at the airport?’” she remarked. “It’s Soviet Union stuff. It’s completely nuts.” Her comments resonate with growing concerns about civil liberties and free expression in the UK.

In her interview, Truss also suggested that the UK could learn from the United States, particularly from the political landscape shaped by former President Donald Trump. “I think we need America’s help,” she said, indicating a belief that the UK has strayed from its path and could benefit from the “Trump revolution.”

Since leaving office, Truss has engaged in various activities, including taking up golf and watching the reality television show The Traitors. She has also traveled to several countries, including the US, and did not dismiss the possibility of returning to active politics when prompted by JJ Anisiobi, the host of Daily Expresso.

Starmer continues to assert that Labour represents a vision of “patriotic renewal.” In a speech delivered in September 2023, he claimed that Farage, along with the Conservative Party and the Scottish National Party, seeks “Britain to fail.”

The exchange between Truss and Starmer highlights the ongoing debate over national identity and patriotism in UK politics, as both leaders seek to define their parties’ positions ahead of future elections.
