A car fire has caused significant damage to the A40 near Gloucester, leading to the closure of the westbound carriageway as emergency repairs are underway. The incident occurred between the A38 (Longford Roundabout) and the A417 (Over Roundabout). According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the fire has been extinguished and cleared, but the carriageway requires resurfacing before it can be reopened to traffic.

National Highways confirmed that the westbound section of the A40 is closed due to the fire, which has resulted in substantial damage. A spokesperson stated, “The A40 in Gloucestershire is closed westbound between the Longford Roundabout (A38) and the Over Roundabout (A417). This is due to a car fire earlier which has resulted in carriageway damage which will require resurfacing before the road can reopen.”

Detour and Traffic Impact

Motorists are being advised to take a diversion route that will redirect traffic along the A38 and A417 to bypass the closure. The diversion has been established to mitigate disruptions caused by the incident.

The spokesperson for National Highways further urged drivers to “allow extra journey time” and to consider adjusting their travel plans if the closure affects their intended route. “Plan ahead; you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey,” they added.

As the situation develops, updates will be provided through live traffic blogs and monitoring services.
