Ukraine Launches Drone Assault on Russian Oil Refinery, Ignites Blaze
A significant drone assault occurred in the early hours of Tuesday as over 50 Ukrainian drones targeted a major Russian oil refinery. The attack, which took place at the Lukoil depot in Kstovo, located in the Nizhniy Novgorod region, resulted in a massive fire visible from several miles away. This strike is part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to disrupt Russian energy infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict.
According to Ukraine’s GUR intelligence agency, the assault involved a coordinated effort using long-range “Beaver” and FP-1 drones, which successfully evaded Russian air defense systems. Witnesses reported a series of powerful explosions leading to a substantial blaze engulfing the Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez refinery, one of Russia’s largest oil processing facilities, with an annual capacity of approximately 17 million tonnes.
The refinery plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to the Moscow region, producing over 50 types of petroleum products, including automotive gasoline, aviation fuel, and diesel. This recent attack aligns with Ukraine’s intensified efforts to target Russian energy facilities, which are vital for funding the Kremlin’s military operations.
In 2025, Ukraine has executed nearly 160 successful strikes against oil extraction and refining facilities across Russia. Vasyl Maliuk, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), noted that at least 20 of those strikes occurred in September and October alone. He emphasized the legitimacy of these targets, stating, “Oil extraction and refining make up around 90% of Russia’s defense budget. These are the dirty petro-roubles funding the war against us.”
The refinery was reportedly undergoing repairs to a rectification column that had been damaged in a previous strike last month. The sustained assaults on Russian energy infrastructure illustrate Ukraine’s commitment to undermining resources that support military operations against its territory.
As the conflict continues, the implications of such attacks remain significant, affecting both Russia’s energy capabilities and the broader dynamics of the ongoing war. The situation reflects the escalating tactics employed by Ukraine in response to the ongoing hostilities.
