Investigative Journalist Nominated for Award After Exposing Gangs
Investigative journalist Zak Garner-Purkis has received a nomination for the prestigious News Media Association’s Making A Difference Prize following his impactful work uncovering Albanian cannabis farms operating within the United Kingdom. Garner-Purkis’s recent investigations have also brought to light allegations of a cover-up involving Sadiq Khan and prompted the Metropolitan Police to review over 9,000 historic cases related to grooming gangs.
In his award-nominated article, titled “Exposed: Albanian Influencers Running Lucrative Cannabis Farms in the UK,” Garner-Purkis detailed the extensive network of cannabis production and distribution allegedly centred in major cities such as Manchester, London, and Birmingham. The investigation revealed hundreds of social media posts that showcased industrial-scale cannabis operations, with many accounts openly celebrating drug production in the UK.
The findings, published by the Daily Express, highlight the audacity of these operations, with numerous Instagram accounts appearing to glorify cannabis cultivation. Many of these accounts explicitly identified their locations, claiming to be based in Birmingham. This alarming trend emphasizes the growing issue of organized crime within the UK.
In response to the investigation, the National Crime Agency stated, “We pursue and disrupt the organized crime groups presenting the greatest risk to the UK’s security and economy. We work with partners in the UK and all around the world, including in Albania, to understand the threat, identify the most harmful suspects and networks, and ultimately protect the UK public from serious and organized crime.”
For those who support Garner-Purkis’s work and wish to contribute to his nomination, voting is open on the News Media Association’s website. Interested readers can navigate to the “national media” page and cast their votes for his revealing story, helping to recognize impactful journalism that tackles serious societal issues.
Garner-Purkis’s work exemplifies the critical role of investigative journalism in shedding light on hidden crime networks. His efforts not only inform the public but also hold authorities accountable, demonstrating the power of media in driving change and ensuring safety within communities.
