Ondo State Disburses ₦350 Million in Scholarships to Over 11,000 Students

The Ondo State Government has initiated the disbursement of over ₦350 million in bursary and scholarship funds to support more than 11,000 indigenous students enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial challenges faced by students and their families. The official launch took place in Akure on Tuesday, where Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, highlighted the program’s significance in enhancing educational access and encouraging academic excellence.

During the ceremony, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized his administration’s commitment to advancing education and fostering human capital development. He noted that 2025 marks a pivotal year in the state’s educational landscape, with various initiatives designed to transform lives and communities. “Today’s bursary, scholarship and financial assistance programme being given to 11,358 students is a demonstration of our government’s deep concern for the welfare of our students,” he said.

The governor acknowledged the financial struggles many students encounter, stating that the program aims to ensure that no child from Ondo State is deprived of an education due to economic constraints. This initiative aligns with the administration’s broader policy to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians of students in tertiary institutions.

Structure and Categories of the Scheme

In her address, the Administrative Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, Funso Omoniyi, explained that the scholarship scheme is categorized into five distinct areas. These include awards for outstanding students, financial assistance for those attending Nigerian Law Schools, support for medical students undergoing clinical studies, and aid for physically challenged students.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, highlighted that the government has allocated funds for various educational interventions, including the payment of registration fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This comprehensive approach underscores the state’s commitment to educational development.

During the event, the president of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), Temitope Alade, expressed gratitude towards the governor for his dedication to student welfare. He urged fellow students to maintain good conduct within their respective institutions, reinforcing the importance of integrity and responsibility in their academic journeys.
