Celtic Issues Three-Game Ban on Green Brigade Following Violence
Celtic Football Club has imposed a three-match ban on the Green Brigade following an incident during a match against Falkirk on October 29, 2023. The club alleges that police officers and stewards were assaulted as they intervened in a confrontation involving a member of their Matchday staff.
According to a detailed club statement, the altercation began when a staff member was assaulted while conducting a routine ticket check at Celtic Park. In response, two police officers attempted to arrest the individual involved. During the arrest, approximately 100 members of the Green Brigade allegedly engaged in a “coordinated and orchestrated action” to “rescue” the assailant, leading to further violence.
The statement described how many individuals in the group sought to conceal their identities with hoods, scarves, and face coverings. They reportedly verbally abused and assaulted both the police officers and the steward in a confined area, creating a situation where one officer was nearly trampled by the crowd.
Celtic’s response to this incident highlights ongoing tensions between the club and the Green Brigade, a supporters’ group known for its vocal presence at matches. The club has previously warned the group about safety and security breaches, issuing a suspended sanction back in July 2023, which stipulated that any further violations could lead to a ban from attending home matches and restricted access to away games.
“Clearly, such violent and threatening behaviour is completely unacceptable,” the statement emphasized. It further confirmed that the ban would take effect this weekend, reflecting the club’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all attendees at matches.
Celtic Football Club expressed disappointment over the incident, stating, “For our staff and police to be assaulted in this way is simply unacceptable. This was a serious and violent incident which cannot be accepted and the Club has no choice but to address this behaviour in the strongest terms.”
The club has reached out to both the Green Brigade and its season ticket holders regarding the matter, signaling a firm stance against actions that jeopardize the safety of fans and staff alike. As Celtic Park continues to be a venue for passionate football, the club aims to foster an atmosphere that is safe and enjoyable for all supporters.
