Clashes Erupt in Mexico City as Protests Injure 120 Amid Anti-Government Sentiment
At least 120 people were injured during violent clashes at anti-government protests in Mexico City on November 15, 2025. A majority of the injured included 100 police officers who faced off against thousands of demonstrators expressing their frustration over rising crime and dissatisfaction with the policies of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The protests were organized primarily by youth groups from Generation Z and were fueled by outrage following the assassination of public figures, notably Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, who had called for decisive action against drug cartels just days before his death on November 1. As participants rallied, many carried banners proclaiming “We are all Carlos Manzo,” demonstrating solidarity with the slain politician.
Protests Escalate as Violence Erupts
Tensions escalated in front of the National Palace, where the police employed tear gas to control the surging crowd. Protesters reportedly dismantled sections of the barriers protecting the presidential residence, aiming to breach the security cordon. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of chaos as demonstrators used metal barricades to push against riot police stationed to safeguard the area.
Videos circulating on social media captured the intensity of the confrontations, showing riot police firing tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the demonstrators. One video shared by the account @defense_civil25 highlighted the chaotic atmosphere, stating, “Mexico rises up against Sheinbaum!!”
In response to the unrest, Sheinbaum accused right-wing politicians of orchestrating the protests to undermine her government. She emphasized her administration’s commitment to addressing the pervasive issues of crime and violence without resorting to a new drug war, which she argues has only led to further bloodshed in the past.
Public Outcry Against Cartel Violence
The protests reflect a growing discontent among citizens, particularly the younger generation, towards the ongoing violence linked to drug cartels. This dissatisfaction has been exacerbated by the recent killings of public figures, raising concerns about safety and governance in the country.
Manzo was known for his outspoken stance against gang violence and had advocated for stringent measures against cartel members terrorizing communities. His assassination during the Day of the Dead festival shocked many and served as a catalyst for the protests, drawing attention to the urgent need for reforms.
As the situation in Mexico City continues to unfold, the government faces mounting pressure to address public safety concerns and the rising tide of violence. The protests signify a pivotal moment for Mexican society, as a new generation demands accountability and effective solutions to the ongoing crisis.
