Montenegro Celebrates Njegoš with Plans to Restore Lovćen Chapel
The municipality of Niksic is moving forward with plans to restore the chapel on Lovćen, an important cultural and spiritual site in Montenegro. During the exhibition titled “One Hundred Years since the Restoration of Njegoš’s Vow Church on Lovćen,” Niksic’s Mayor Marko Kovačević emphasized the significance of this restoration for the national identity of Montenegro.
Kovačević stated that Njegoš’s image is integral to the personal narrative of Montenegro, questioning how the country can honor its heritage while disregarding Njegoš’s final wishes. He highlighted the commitment of the local community, which has been kept alive by the late Metropolitan Amfilohije and is now continued by Mitropolit Joanikije. “Our vow is to restore the chapel on Lovćen to renew the roof of our homeland,” he proclaimed.
Unity and Cultural Preservation
At the opening of the exhibition, Mitropolit Joanikije expressed that the unification of the Montenegrin people mirrors the restoration of the chapel. He noted the importance of this event, saying, “As we celebrate this significant date, we sense that the restoration of the chapel on Lovćen must fulfill Njegoš’s legacy. We are aware that much work lies ahead, and we will achieve the most through cultural and spiritual initiatives.”
The exhibition was held at the Dvorac kralja Nikole and featured insights from the Director of JU “Museums and Galleries” Niksic, Vesna Todorović, and the exhibition’s author, Mr. Dušan Babac. Notable attendees included Metropolitan Metodije of Budimlja-Nikšić and local government officials, such as Milica Lalatović Žižić, President of the Niksic Assembly, along with numerous citizens.
As part of the event, a documentary film titled “The Ceremonial Visit of King Alexander I Karađorđević and Queen Maria to Montenegro and Dalmatia in 1925” was screened, further highlighting the historical significance of the chapel and its restoration.
The renewed focus on the chapel at Lovćen underscores a broader commitment to cultural preservation in Montenegro, aiming to honor the country’s historical figures while fostering a sense of unity among its people. The efforts reflect a dedication to maintaining Montenegro’s rich heritage for future generations.
