Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Representative Jerry Nadler, a long-serving Democratic congressman from New York, following Nadler’s announcement that he will not seek reelection. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump referred to Nadler, 78, as a “psychotic nut job” and expressed his disdain for the congressman, who has served in the House of Representatives for 34 years.

In his posts, Trump reflected on his longstanding opposition to Nadler, claiming, “I’ve been beating this bum for 40 years.” He highlighted their contentious history, starting from Trump’s time as a real estate developer in New York City, where he alleged that Nadler opposed him without justification. Trump continued by stating, “It will be a great day for the U.S.A. when Nadler, a pathetic lightweight, is out of office and leaves our beautiful, and NOW VERY SAFE, Washington, D.C.”

Nadler’s decision to retire was publicly announced in an interview with The New York Times, where he cited the need for generational change within the Democratic Party, particularly in light of President Joe Biden’s perceived decline in leadership. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party,” Nadler remarked. He emphasized the importance of introducing younger voices into the political landscape while acknowledging that not all established figures should be replaced.

Trump’s recent outburst comes after Nadler’s remarks about Trump’s alleged collaboration with political rivals, including New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Nadler accused Trump of attempting to manipulate the upcoming election in favor of his billionaire donors, specifically naming Andrew Cuomo as a potential ally in these efforts.

The tensions between Trump and Nadler are not new. Nadler was a key figure in the impeachment proceedings against Trump during his presidency, leading to intense public exchanges between the two. In January 2020, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump infamously labeled Nadler a “sleazebag.”

As Nadler prepares to exit Congress, his long-standing legacy will be viewed through the lens of both his legislative contributions and his contentious relationship with Trump. Nadler’s retirement marks the end of an era for a figure who has been a prominent voice in the Democratic Party and a significant opponent of Trump’s policies.
