Samsung Refrigerators Face Backlash Over Performance Issues

Samsung, a leading name in consumer electronics, is facing increasing scrutiny over its line of refrigerators, which have garnered numerous complaints from consumers. Over the past five years, reports have highlighted a range of issues, including inefficiencies in cooling, mechanical failures, and customer service shortcomings.
In a 2019 investigation by News 6, numerous families in Florida reported problems with their Samsung refrigerators. Complaints included frozen components, ice bucket malfunctions, and excessive ice crystal buildup. Further concerns were raised in a coverage by ABC 10 News, which revealed reports of “dangerously high temperatures” in some units. In an unusual request, Samsung asked affected customers to cut the cords of their malfunctioning refrigerators and send photographic evidence to qualify for refunds or replacements, a move aimed at preventing the resale of faulty units.
In 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) began investigating Samsung refrigerators after receiving hundreds of complaints from buyers, with issues logged over a three-year period ending in 2021. During this time, approximately 80,000 users joined a Facebook group to document performance problems with Samsung’s cooling appliances, the highest number of complaints recorded among its competitors that year.
According to tests conducted by Consumer Reports, Samsung’s side-by-side refrigerators were found to be “more likely than other brands” to fail in maintaining proper cooling temperatures, primarily due to compressor issues. The report also indicated that Samsung bottom-freezer models were more susceptible to icemaker problems, putting them at a disadvantage compared to brands like Electrolux, Kenmore, and KitchenAid.
Benjamin Schlichter, who operates Bens Appliances and Junk, a YouTube channel and appliance shop in Ohio, expressed concern about Samsung’s reputation, describing their refrigerators as “the most notorious refrigerators on the U.S. market.” He highlighted various issues, including noise, water leakage, and cooling failures, noting that his company has repaired thousands of Samsung’s two-door side-by-side units and even created a DIY kit for common problems.
In a video featuring insights from over 200 technicians, Schlichter stated that “of all the indoor ice units, Samsung’s are, by far, the worst of the bunch.” Notably, no Samsung refrigerator has made it onto any of the recommended lists for top-mount, single-door, side-by-side, or French door refrigerators.
Consumer feedback on public platforms reflects persistent dissatisfaction, with users detailing icemaker failures requiring multiple replacements, system breakdowns, ice buildup, and water leakage. On Samsung’s Community forum, customers have shared experiences of their refrigerators malfunctioning shortly after purchase, excessive noise, damaged products, confusing return policies, and subpar customer support.
In 2022, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Samsung, citing cooling inefficiencies as a critical defect impacting the operation of its refrigerators. The plaintiffs argued, “This defect is fatal to the operation of the refrigerators, which serve one purpose: keeping food and other consumable goods at a safe temperature,” according to CBS News.
The CPSC has noted that Samsung refrigerators continue to be the most frequently reported appliances among consumers. An analysis by USA Today revealed that over 75% of refrigerator-related complaints were linked to Samsung. Since 2020, Samsung’s refrigerators have accounted for the largest share of performance-related complaints, exceeding the total from all other brands combined.
In response to these issues, Samsung has faced penalties for faulty appliances. In 2017, the brand was ordered to provide full refunds or replacements to dissatisfied customers. Similar rulings were issued by local courts and consumer protection bodies, addressing operational defects within the warranty period.
Samsung offers warranties that include a 2-year icemaker warranty, a 10-year compressor warranty, and a 5-year sealed system warranty. Despite these assurances, consumer confidence in the brand’s refrigerators has been severely impacted as the company continues to address ongoing issues across its product line.
