Shearer and Lineker Assess Sesko’s Struggles After United’s Loss

In a disappointing match for Manchester United, Benjamin Sesko struggled to make an impact during the team’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. This match marked Sesko’s first Premier League start after his summer transfer from RB Leipzig for £73.7 million. Despite high expectations, the 22-year-old Slovenian international faced significant challenges, recording just 20 touches and one shot before being substituted in the 80th minute.
During the match, Sesko completed only 14 passes and won 33 percent of his duels. Observers noted that his teammates failed to provide him with adequate service, limiting his ability to contribute effectively. There were opportunities for United to send in crosses, yet the ball often reverted back or was played inside instead.
Experts Weigh In on Sesko’s Performance
Both Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, prominent figures in football analysis, expressed their views on Sesko’s difficult outing during a recent episode of “The Rest Is Football” podcast. Shearer, a former Newcastle United striker, emphasized the importance of service for a forward, stating, “I look at Sesko… and he had that one shot very early on in the game. Other than that, he must be thinking; ‘Any danger? Any chance of giving me something here’?”
Lineker echoed these sentiments, highlighting how Sesko was “absolutely starved of any real service.” He noted a moment when Sesko broke the offside trap but was thwarted by a block from the goalkeeper. “He does also look quick for a big guy,” Lineker commented, acknowledging Sesko’s potential and movement on the field. However, he lamented that the lack of service made it difficult for him to shine.
Concerns About Transfer Expectations
Reflecting on Sesko’s transfer fee, Shearer raised concerns about the pressure the young player faces at Manchester United. He remarked, “It’s a lot of money for him and it’s a massive ask for him to go in at a club and be in a team that’s under huge pressure.” The expectation for Sesko to deliver immediate results in a struggling team adds further weight to his current performance.
So far, Sesko has yet to score in five appearances for the club, including a lackluster showing in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town last month. His inability to find the back of the net in high-stakes matches raises questions about his adaptation to the Premier League.
Manchester United’s defeat was compounded by goals from Phil Foden, who opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and a brace from Erling Haaland in the second half. The loss marks another setback for a team striving to regain its former glory.
As United continues to navigate a challenging season, the analysis from Shearer and Lineker highlights the critical need for the team to provide better support for Sesko and other forwards. The coming weeks will be pivotal as the club aims to find its footing and improve its performance on the pitch.
