Ceredigion Primary School Students Compete in Cook-Off Final

Students from three primary schools in Ceredigion will showcase their culinary skills in a live cook-off final on October 9, 2023. This exciting competition features Year 5 students from Ysgol Dyffryn Cledlyn in Llanybydder, Ysgol Gymunedol Y Dderi in Llangybi, and Ysgol Gymunedol Gatholig Padarn Sant in Aberystwyth. They will battle for the coveted title of Junior Chefs of the Year by preparing three-course meals under the guidance of experienced culinary mentors.
The cook-off will not only test the young chefs’ cooking abilities but also their creativity and understanding of nutritional practices. Teams will be assessed on several criteria, including creativity, nutritional value, sustainability, and seasonality of their dishes. The students’ capacity to prepare the meals independently will also play a crucial role in the judging process.
Renowned former Michelin-star chef Douglas Balish, alongside food consultant Hazel Thomas and director of Naturesbase Education Gyles Morris, will serve as judges for the event. Their expertise will ensure that the competition maintains a high standard, providing valuable feedback to the participants.
The winning team will be rewarded with an immersive outdoor cooking and foraging experience at Naturesbase in Cilcennin. This prize aims to deepen the students’ appreciation for local ingredients and sustainable cooking practices, further enhancing their culinary education.
The annual cook-off not only encourages healthy competition among young chefs but also promotes teamwork and creativity in the kitchen. As they prepare for the final, the students are likely to gain not only cooking skills but also confidence and camaraderie with their peers. The event highlights the importance of engaging children in food education, fostering a new generation of mindful eaters and aspiring chefs.
As the date approaches, anticipation builds within the schools and the local community, eager to witness the culinary talents of Ceredigion’s young chefs.
