A new research initiative aims to gather insights from farmers regarding the challenges they encounter. The project, led by researcher Bethan John, focuses on critical themes such as food security, economic uncertainty, community resilience, and the ecological and climate crisis. Through a series of free storytelling and filmmaking workshops, participants will have the chance to share their experiences and contribute to a community-made film or series of films.

Bethan John, who grew up in a rural farming community near Carmarthen and now resides in North Pembrokeshire, emphasizes the wealth of knowledge within local farming communities. “There is so much expertise within the rural communities where I live,” she stated. “One of the aims of this project is to capture and value this knowledge, while exploring a diversity of views and experiences.”

Workshop Details and Objectives

The workshops are designed to foster creativity and discussion among a small group of participants. They will be facilitated in both Welsh and English, ensuring inclusivity. Participants will engage in various activities that encourage idea generation and dialogue while receiving training in storytelling and filmmaking techniques.

No prior experience is necessary, as Bethan John will provide comprehensive training throughout the workshops. She highlighted the significance of storytelling in addressing complex issues, stating, “There’s a wealth of academic research that demonstrates the importance of storytelling and creative expression as a way of reflecting on and engaging with complex issues that can help solve real-world problems.”

The workshops are scheduled to take place on October 1, 2023, at Bancyfelin Village Hall from 17:30 to 20:30 and on October 2, 2023, at Crymych Market Hall during the same hours.

Invitation to Participate

Farmers or those with a farming background interested in participating are encouraged to contact Bethan John for further information. Additional workshops may be organized if the initial dates are not suitable for all interested parties.

This initiative represents a collaborative effort among various organizations, aiming to engage rural communities in meaningful dialogue about their experiences and the challenges they face. By capturing these stories, the project seeks to highlight the significance of farmers’ contributions to society and the environment.
