Revolutionary ‘Bone Glue’ Heals Fractures in Minutes, Promises Safe Recovery

In a significant advancement for orthopaedic medicine, researchers in China have introduced Bone-02, a bio-adhesive that can heal fractures in just three minutes. This innovative material not only bonds bone fragments but also dissolves naturally as the body heals, potentially replacing the need for traditional metal plates and screws. The implications of this development could transform fracture treatment for millions of patients globally.
The creation of Bone-02 comes from a team at Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Xiaoshan Hospital, following almost a decade of research. Lead investigator Professor Pan Xunwu emphasized that traditional methods of fracture repair often lead to complications, including the loss of bone fragments and prolonged recovery times. “In the process, bone fragments were often lost, reducing bone mass and ultimately negatively impacting patients’ quality of life,” he stated during a discussion with Chosun Ilbo.
Breakthrough in Biodegradable Technology
Inspired by the natural adhesive properties of oysters, Bone-02 mimics their ability to bond even in wet, blood-rich environments. The research team undertook hundreds of formulation changes and extensive animal trials to develop a glue that balances biocompatibility with the necessary adhesive strength. Unlike conventional metal implants, which require surgical removal, Bone-02 is fully biodegradable and absorbed by the body within six months, reducing the need for follow-up surgeries.
Clinical trials involving more than 150 patients have showcased the adhesive’s effectiveness. For instance, a patient with a comminuted wrist fracture had their bone fragments secured in just three minutes through a small incision of 2 to 3 cm. In contrast, traditional treatments would necessitate a larger incision and subsequent removal surgery a year later. Remarkably, the patient regained full wrist function after only three months without complications.
The adhesive demonstrates impressive metrics: it can withstand over 181 kg of tensile strength, has a compressive strength of approximately 10 MPa, and a shear strength near 0.5 MPa. These specifications suggest that Bone-02 could rival or even replace standard steel plates and screws, as highlighted by Global Times.
Future Implications for Orthopaedic Treatment
According to Lin Xianfeng, an associate chief orthopaedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital and co-lead researcher, Bone-02 could change the landscape of fracture treatment. The adhesive’s rapid bonding capabilities and straightforward application promise to significantly reduce surgery times and lessen intraoperative damage. This advancement addresses long-standing issues in the development of bone adhesives, which have persisted since the 1940s. Previous attempts involving gelatin, epoxy resins, and acrylates failed due to inadequate biocompatibility and strength.
Bone-02 is currently undergoing multi-centre randomised controlled clinical trials, which are the benchmark for regulatory approval in medical research. If these trials yield positive results, the adhesive could be introduced in hospitals worldwide within the next few years. Medical experts remain cautiously optimistic, noting the necessity for peer-reviewed studies and adherence to international safety standards. Nevertheless, early evidence suggests that Bone-02 may provide a faster and safer path to recovery for millions of patients suffering from fractures.
