Expert Reveals Timing Strategy to Slash Car Insurance Costs

Motorists could potentially reduce their car insurance premiums by as much as 50% by strategically timing their search for quotes, according to industry expert Lorna Macpherson from Ocean Finance. This approach could lead to savings of approximately £164 for UK drivers. Many individuals currently rely on their insurer’s automatic renewal notices or postpone their search until their policy is about to expire. This delay could cost them significantly.

Experts suggest that the optimal time to obtain car insurance quotes is about 26 days before a policy’s expiration. Macpherson explains, “You’ll often get the best car insurance quotes around 26 days before your policy is due to start. Anywhere between 18 and 28 days works, but 26 days is the sweet spot.” For instance, if a current policy ends at the end of March and a new one is set to begin on April 1, drivers should aim to secure a quote by March 6, 2026.

Waiting until the last minute to apply for insurance can lead to higher costs. Insurers often raise prices for policies purchased closer to the start date, making it crucial for consumers to plan ahead. Shifting the quote request to three to four weeks before renewal can substantially decrease premiums.

Five Strategies to Further Reduce Insurance Costs

In addition to timing their searches effectively, Macpherson offers five strategies for drivers looking to lower their car insurance costs even further:

1. **Avoid Auto-Renewals**: While convenient, relying on automatic renewals often means missing out on more competitive rates across the market.

2. **Pay Annually**: Although this payment method isn’t feasible for everyone, paying for insurance in one lump sum can save considerable money, as monthly payments typically incur interest charges.

3. **Utilize Comparison Tools**: By checking multiple quotes in a matter of minutes, consumers can identify the best deals without dedicating hours to research.

4. **Increase Voluntary Excess**: Opting for a higher voluntary excess can lower premiums. However, it’s essential to ensure this amount remains affordable in the event of a claim.

5. **Limit Optional Extras**: Drivers should only purchase add-ons, such as breakdown cover or legal assistance, if they genuinely need them. Avoiding unnecessary extras can prevent overspending.

By implementing these strategies, motorists could not only save on their insurance costs but also ensure they are making informed decisions that benefit their finances.
