Households Urged to Claim £200 from Household Support Fund

Households receiving benefits, including Universal Credit, are encouraged to apply for a one-time payment of £200 through the Household Support Fund (HSF). This initiative is part of a larger fund totaling £742 million allocated to councils across England, aimed at providing financial assistance to those in need.
Eligibility and Application Process
Local councils are currently in the process of distributing their allocated funds, but the support available can differ significantly depending on the area. For example, the Wealden District Council has officially opened applications for residents seeking this £200 payment. To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside within the Wealden District, and receive one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit (including the Housing Costs element)
- Housing Benefit
- Council Tax Reduction
- Severe Mental Impairment (SMI) exemption
Those who meet these criteria and did not receive assistance during the previous round of the HSF, which ran from October 2024 to March 2025, can apply. Only one application is permitted per household, and successful claims will be processed, with funds transferred to bank accounts within 14 days.
Additional information on the application process can be found on the Wealden District Council’s official website: www.wealden.gov.uk/benefits/household-support-fund.
Future Opportunities and Broader Support
The current round of the Household Support Fund will continue until March 31, 2026. A second phase will begin on October 1, 2025, during which those who received help in the earlier phase will also be eligible to apply for the £200 payment, provided they meet the same eligibility criteria.
Residents outside Wealden may still qualify for support through their local councils, as each authority sets its own eligibility guidelines. The HSF was introduced in 2021 to assist individuals on low incomes, those receiving benefits, or individuals categorized as vulnerable.
To explore available support, individuals should visit their local council’s website or contact their customer service helpline for assistance. Councils in various regions, including Birmingham and North Northamptonshire, have also initiated programs offering funds or vouchers for low-income households.
In addition to the HSF, there are various resources available for individuals struggling financially. Food banks, such as those operated by the Trussell Trust, provide emergency food parcels to those in need. The Trust’s website offers a tool to locate the nearest food bank: trussell.org.uk/emergency-food/find-a-foodbank.
Individuals may also be eligible for additional benefits that could significantly improve their financial situation. Utilizing benefit calculators from organizations like Turn2Us and Entitledto can help individuals determine what they may qualify for, including tax credits and Universal Credit.
Ultimately, those facing difficulties should take proactive steps to explore their options, as there are numerous programs designed to provide essential support during challenging times.
