Octopus Energy Offers Tips to Save £80 on Winter Bills
As energy costs rise, Octopus Energy has announced a practical way for households to save approximately £80 annually on heating bills this winter. The recommendation comes in response to a recent 2% increase in the energy price cap set by Ofgem, effective from October 1. The company emphasizes the importance of detecting and sealing draughts around homes to minimize heat loss.
Identifying Draughts to Enhance Energy Efficiency
Draughts are often found around doors and windows, contributing significantly to heat escaping from homes. Octopus Energy suggests that homeowners can easily identify these problem areas using the back of their hand, or more effectively, with a thermal camera. This technology highlights temperature differences, allowing users to pinpoint the warmest and coldest spots in their homes.
The company states, “A continuous draught can quickly undo all the good work of your heating—essentially wasting energy.” By sealing these gaps, households can retain warmth and stretch their heating budgets further. While professional draught-proofing services can cost between £300 for smaller properties and £750 for larger ones, homeowners can take a DIY approach by making their own excluders from old fabric scraps.
Support and Resources for Households
Furthermore, Which?, a consumer advocacy group, echoes Octopus Energy’s advice. In light of the recent price cap increase, senior researcher Karen Lawrence noted that many local councils offer free access to thermal cameras. For those in London, the Library of Things rents them out for as little as £15 per day.
Although Octopus Energy’s camera loan program is currently closed for the winter season, the company has previously loaned cameras to nearly 5,000 customers. Feedback indicates that many have successfully identified heat loss and improved their energy efficiency as a result. The company emphasizes its commitment to helping customers save on energy costs while also benefiting the environment.
As the winter of 2025 approaches, the need for energy conservation is increasingly urgent. With many UK households facing record-high energy bills, Octopus Energy has prioritized camera loans to those who need assistance most. For individuals not restricted by budget, a professional thermal survey remains an option for identifying energy inefficiencies.
To further support consumers, Which? offers a Home Energy Planning Service designed to help households choose the best options for their particular circumstances.
In summary, by taking simple steps to identify and seal draughts, homeowners can save significantly on their energy bills this winter. With rising costs affecting so many, these proactive measures could make a vital difference in managing household expenses.
