Winter Fuel Payments Launch Amid Surge in Scams

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has begun distributing the Winter Fuel Payments to approximately nine million pensioners across Wales and England. These payments, ranging from £100 to £300, are automatically processed and will be completed by the end of December 2023. The exact amount each pensioner receives depends on various factors, including whether they live alone or with a partner, their eligibility for other benefits, and their living situation, particularly if they reside in a care home.

With the rollout of these payments, the DWP has issued a significant warning regarding a notable increase in scams. Reports indicate a staggering 150 percent surge in fraudulent attempts, where scammers impersonate government officials or payment providers to deceive individuals into disclosing personal information. The DWP emphasizes that legitimate officials will never request bank details or prompt recipients to click on links to receive their payments.

Minister for Pensions, Torsten Bell, stated, “From today, nine million pensioners across England and Wales will benefit from the Winter Fuel Payment hitting their bank account. Payments are being made automatically throughout November and December, so don’t worry if yours hasn’t arrived yet. But do remember to stay alert to scam texts; the Government will never ask you to share personal information or click on links to claim your payment.”

Most pensioners can expect to see these payments deposited in their accounts by mid-December. Those who do not receive their payment by January 28, 2026, or who have questions regarding their eligibility, are encouraged to reach out to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre at 0800 731 0160.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to assist pensioners facing rising living costs. The DWP urges recipients on lower incomes to explore additional support, such as Pension Credit, which averages around £4,300 per year, or Attendance Allowance, which can provide up to £5,740 annually for those with care needs.

Deposits for the Winter Fuel Payment will be identifiable in bank statements, appearing with a reference that starts with the recipient’s National Insurance number, followed by ‘DWP WFP’, facilitating safe recognition. The DWP has also informed pensioners with annual incomes exceeding £35,000 that they may need to repay the benefit later through their tax code or 2025/26 tax return, with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) directly contacting those affected.

As the payments commence, officials remain focused on ensuring that pensioners are informed and protected against fraudulent activities, safeguarding vital financial assistance during the winter months.
