Max Bowden Teases Ben Mitchell’s Dramatic Return to EastEnders

Max Bowden, known for his role as Ben Mitchell in the long-running soap opera EastEnders, confirmed his character’s return to Walford during a recent appearance on the ITV show This Morning on August 25, 2024. This return is set against the backdrop of a tumultuous storyline involving his husband, Callum, and a shocking affair.
During the Bank Holiday edition of the programme, hosted by Rylan Clark and Josie Gibson, Bowden discussed his character’s comeback after a stint in a US prison. He revealed that Ben Mitchell will return as a “doting husband” following a transfer from prison, which is tied to a significant event in the storyline: Callum’s father’s funeral. The actor described filming his return as “lovely,” hinting at the emotional depth of the upcoming episodes.
In a light-hearted exchange, Rylan inquired about the nature of Ben’s incarceration. Bowden confirmed that his character was imprisoned for fraud and has been on “day release” for the funeral, adding a layer of complexity to the plot. “He’s been a naughty boy,” Bowden joked, indicating the dramatic twists that viewers can expect.
Bowden’s portrayal of Ben Mitchell began in 2019 and spanned nearly five years, during which he appeared in approximately 600 episodes. His last appearance in the show was in early 2024, following his character’s arrest based on an international warrant. Reflecting on his departure, Bowden shared, “The character was tired, I was tired,” emphasizing the rigorous demands of the role and the decision for a break.
Since Ben’s absence, the character of Callum, played by Tony Clay, has been involved in an uncharacteristic affair, which has added tension to the storyline. This subplot is likely to unfold dramatically as Ben returns, creating a compelling narrative for audiences.
In addition to his return to EastEnders, Bowden is currently collaborating with former Coronation Street actress Katie McGlynn in the touring stage production Murder At Midnight. This production, set to open in September 2024, takes place on New Year’s Eve in a seemingly peaceful corner of Kent, where a murder mystery unfolds.
Fans of both EastEnders and theatre can look forward to a busy autumn for Bowden, who is set to bring his talent back to the screen and stage. With the combination of his character’s dramatic return and the upcoming theatrical performance, viewers are in for an exciting season ahead.
EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, ensuring that fans can keep up with the evolving storylines and character developments.
