A Grandfather’s Coat: Rediscovering Memories Through Fashion

The coat inherited from a grandfather has become a poignant symbol of comfort and nostalgia for many. For one individual, this black Crombie coat, once belonging to their grandfather, has served as a refuge during tumultuous teenage years. The emotional connection to the coat resurfaced recently, evoking memories of a formative period of life.

At the age of 15, the writer faced the loss of their grandfather, who passed away at 69 while immersed in his passion for archaeology. Although their relationship was not as close as with their grandmother, the bond was meaningful. The opportunity to explore their grandfather’s wardrobe revealed a surprising array of stylish attire, contrasting sharply with the casual workwear they had known him to wear.

Among the items selected were collarless shirts, suits, and the striking black overcoat, which was a knee-length, heavy garment, silk-lined and crafted by the renowned Crombie of Aberdeen. This coat, known to have been worn by esteemed figures from politicians to pop stars, provided not only warmth but also a sense of identity and protection against the insecurities that accompany adolescence.

The youth found solace in the coat, which came with the faint scent of pipe tobacco, a lingering reminder of their grandfather. In photographs taken during that period, the coat was often adorned with badges from Echo & the Bunnymen, a band the writer admired. Footwear options included classic Doc Martens or burgundy winkle-pickers, with hairstyles requiring meticulous styling, often aided by Country Born gel for that quintessential 1980s look.

Throughout the remainder of their teenage years, the coat became a steadfast companion, providing comfort during outings with friends and moments of solitude in parks. However, as the years progressed, the coat faded from memory, becoming a relic of the past, until a recent visit to their mother’s home rekindled those memories.

While preparing to turn on the immersion heater, the coat was rediscovered, tucked away in the back of the airing cupboard. Although it showed signs of age, being nearly 90 years old and slightly frayed at the edges, it still held a significant place in the writer’s heart. The experience of finding it again brought a mix of emotions, reflecting both nostalgia and the passage of time.

Despite its worn condition, the writer acknowledges the coat’s unique blend of elegance and wear. While contemplating when to wear it again, they noted a certain solemnity surrounding its presence, suggesting it might be suited for occasions of remembrance.

The coat now hangs in their own cupboard, a tangible connection to their grandfather. In a way, it has been “reinherited,” symbolizing the continuity of familial ties. The hope is that one day, it may be passed down to future generations, continuing the legacy of memory and connection forged through personal belongings.
