Montenegro to Launch First Satellite “Luča” on December 28, 2025
Montenegro is set to make history with the launch of its first satellite, “Luča,” scheduled for December 28, 2025, at 14:18 Central European Time (CET) from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia. The satellite will be launched aboard a Soyuz rocket, recognized as one of the most reliable launch vehicles in the global space industry.
The satellite “Luča” will travel as part of a secondary payload alongside several other international satellites, including the QMR-KWT 2 from the UAE and Kuwait, and the TriSat-3 from Qatar. The launch will occur under nighttime conditions, adding a unique aspect to this historic event. While minor adjustments to the launch schedule may occur for technical reasons, the likelihood of such changes is considered low at this stage.
Equipped with a camera, cosmic radiation sensors, and telemetry devices, “Luča” is designed to support various scientific and educational initiatives. The satellite’s official call sign will be 4O6MSR, with mission operations overseen by chief engineer Nikola Perović. The expected operational lifespan of the satellite is approximately three years, with full communication anticipated to be established within 10 to 15 days post-launch.
Significance of “Luča” for Montenegro
The satellite is wholly owned by the Montenegro Space Research organization, which operates both as a non-governmental organization (NGO) and a limited liability company. This initiative positions Montenegro as the first country in the Western Balkans to have a satellite that is entirely owned, technically, legally, and operationally, by its national body.
This accomplishment is a testament to the rapid progress made by Montenegro Space Research in less than four years. During this time, the organization has established the first functional infrastructure for space industry development in Montenegro. It has implemented educational programs for elementary and high school students, organized internships for Sorbonne students, and hosted significant global events such as NASA-sponsored hackathons and the inaugural CanSat competition in collaboration with the Indian Embassy in Vienna.
The organization has expressed gratitude to the Montenegrin government for its crucial support in realizing this project, along with strategic partnerships with entities like the University of Montenegro and Technopolis.
Educational and Research Perspectives
The “Luča” mission holds considerable educational and research value. Data processing and analysis will be conducted through student and research groups associated with the Montenegro Space Research program, involving collaborations with prestigious institutions such as the University of Montenegro, Paris-Sorbonne University, Imperial College London, and Lomonosov Moscow State University. Plans are underway to expand this collaboration to academic and research institutions in other countries, including the UAE and Kuwait.
Filip Jovićević, founder and director of Montenegro Space Research, highlighted the importance of engaging with ambitious individuals in Montenegro. He envisions a future where these individuals do not remain isolated but become part of a robust and sustainable community.
He remarked on the significance of establishing a comprehensive space program, stating that the efforts extend beyond a single satellite. The program is built on infrastructure, knowledge, education, and systemic projects that have been developed over time.
Jovićević emphasized the program’s inclusivity, noting that it engages all generations, from preschool children to doctoral candidates, in the advancement of space technologies. He believes that initiatives involving the youngest members of society, including workshops and model rocketry, spark curiosity and lay the groundwork for future scientists and engineers.
In addition to the launch, partnerships have been formalized with the University of Montenegro and the largest private space company in the UAE, Orbital Space. The organization has successfully hosted various events and educational programs that have garnered international recognition.
As Montenegro prepares for the launch of “Luča,” it signifies a pivotal moment for the nation, affirming its place in the global space community and opening new horizons for future exploration and innovation.
