Pet Insurance Costs Surge by 300% Based on Breed and Location
Pet owners are being advised to carefully consider their choices of dog breed and location, as new data reveals that insurance premiums can fluctuate dramatically. According to research from Go Compare, dog insurance costs can vary by as much as 300%, while cat insurance premiums may differ by up to 241%, primarily influenced by the pet’s breed and the owner’s postcode.
Significant Variations in Insurance Premiums
The cost of insuring a pedigree dog averages £13.13 per month, compared to £7.90 for mixed-breed dogs. Larger breeds face particularly steep costs; for instance, insuring a Bernese Mountain Dog can reach £27.36 monthly, which is more than three times the cost of a Chihuahua, which averages £7.46, as reported by Sky News.
Similar trends are observed in cat insurance. The Alpaca LaPerm, identified as the most expensive breed to insure in the UK, costs around £22.19 per month. In contrast, a tortoiseshell British Shorthair is insured for an average of just £6.51 monthly.
Location Impacts Premium Costs
Where pet owners reside significantly impacts their insurance premiums. For example, those living in London face the highest average monthly premiums at £13.47, while pet owners in Wales enjoy the lowest at £9.61. The average costs across the UK are £11.34 in England, £10.75 in Northern Ireland, and £9.99 in Scotland.
Despite these high costs, there is some positive news for pet owners. Average monthly premiums for dogs have decreased by 12% over the past year, while cat owners are paying 3% less than they were a year ago.
Experts suggest several strategies for reducing insurance costs. Increasing the voluntary excess can lower monthly payments, while opting for a multi-pet policy may yield discounts. Paying annually rather than monthly can also result in savings, and long-term customers might negotiate better deals by indicating a willingness to switch providers.
With such substantial differences in insurance costs based on breed and location, the choice of pet and home address could significantly affect annual expenses for pet owners. By understanding these variables, owners can make informed decisions that may save them hundreds of pounds each year.
