The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has urged troops of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), to prepare for a significant offensive against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). This initiative marks a crucial phase in Nigeria’s ongoing counter-insurgency efforts. General Shaibu stated that the outcome of this operation could be pivotal in ending terrorism in the region.

Addressing soldiers at the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, on March 15, 2024, General Shaibu characterized the upcoming operations as a turning point in the fight against insurgency. “You have been training to defeat the terrorists disturbing the North-East. This time, you are going to do it differently,” he emphasized. He assured the troops that all necessary combat enablers and new operational platforms had been provided to ensure their success.

The Army Chief highlighted that this phase of the mission belongs to a new generation of soldiers. He called on them to build on the achievements of their predecessors who served in both national and international operations. His remarks underscored the responsibility resting on their shoulders to deliver a decisive blow to Boko Haram and ISWAP.

As the military gears up for this offensive, there are reports indicating that these terrorist groups, although weakened, are regrouping and exploiting vulnerabilities along the borders, particularly around the Lake Chad region. Analysts have expressed concerns that geopolitical shifts and disruptions in arms trafficking could embolden militants if Nigeria’s military response lacks momentum.

In a show of support for the troops, General Shaibu confirmed the deployment of experienced officers to the operational theatre, alongside upgraded surveillance assets and precision strike capabilities. “Those before you have done it. This is your own time,” he declared, reinforcing the sense of urgency and responsibility among the soldiers.

General Shaibu also stressed the importance of troop welfare, noting that it plays a vital role in morale and combat performance. He assured the soldiers that their well-being had been prioritized through improved rations, timely payment of entitlements, and enhanced medical care. “We will continue to improve your well-being,” he promised, also mentioning plans for better accommodation and educational opportunities for soldiers’ children.

During his two-day visit to Maiduguri, General Shaibu took the time to visit wounded personnel at the 7 Division Medical Specialists Hospital. He also engaged in various activities, including a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno and inspecting ongoing works at the Nigerian Army Aviation/TB2 Armed Drone Hangar. Additionally, he reviewed repaired armored vehicles and commissioned new accommodation facilities for transit soldiers.

Reflecting on the past, General Shaibu led a moment of remembrance for the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away a year ago. During a Juma’at service commemorating the anniversary of his death, he described General Lagbaja as a gallant leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s security are deeply appreciated.

The Army Chief noted that a series of commemorative activities, including church services and Friday prayers, have been organized to honor his memory and the sacrifices made by all personnel in defense of the nation. He extended condolences to General Lagbaja’s family, encouraging them to find solace in the legacy of courage he left behind.

General Shaibu concluded by appealing to the Nigerian public for continued support of the armed forces through prayers and a collective commitment to national unity. He reaffirmed the military’s resolve to secure the country and maintain its territorial integrity, emphasizing that the fight against insurgency continues with renewed vigor and determination.
