Senator Jibrin Barau, the Deputy President of the Senate, welcomed over 1,000 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement into the All Progressives Congress (APC) on March 15, 2024. The event took place in the Kano metropolis and was marked by the symbolic removal of red caps by the defectors, now united under the banner of “Kwankwasiyya One Blood.”

During the ceremony, Aminu Murtala Minjibir, the group’s leader, highlighted that their decision to join the APC was motivated by the developmental initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Barau in Kano and throughout Nigeria. The group has adopted a new name, Barau Maliya One Blood, in honor of the Deputy Senate President. Minjibir expressed disappointment with the NNPP, stating that it failed to meet the expectations of the people of Kano, despite the party’s prior goodwill.

“This is a historic day in our lives as we officially join the train of success, the APC,” Minjibir remarked. He emphasized the group’s extensive reach, indicating that members are present across all 44 local government areas of Kano State.

Barau characterized the defection as a “wise and timely decision,” asserting that the NNPP has devolved into a “mushroom party” with limited influence. He expressed confidence in the APC’s status as not only the largest political party in Nigeria but also the biggest in Africa.

“We are here to welcome a group of hardworking men and women, who have decided to join our great party, the APC. You have made the right choice,” Barau stated. He encouraged the new members to embrace the APC’s commitment to development and inclusivity.

Barau also praised President Tinubu for his unwavering support for Kano, emphasizing that the president has consistently attended to requests aimed at enhancing the welfare of the people. “All he needs now is our support and prayers,” Barau added. He urged the new members to work collectively to advance the state and the nation further.

The event marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Kano State as the APC aims to consolidate its influence following the defection of a substantial number of NNPP members.
