SNP Councillor Grant Laing Resigns After Embezzlement Charges
Grant Laing, the leader of Perth and Kinross Council, has resigned following charges of embezzlement that allegedly occurred over an eight-year period from 2017 to 2025. The 63-year-old Scottish National Party (SNP) councillor stepped down for “personal reasons,” as stated in a brief announcement on the council’s official website. He has also decided to leave the SNP and will continue his role as an independent councillor.
The news of Laing’s resignation has sent shockwaves through the party. An unnamed SNP source commented, “This has come as a huge shock to the party. As there are live criminal proceedings, we can’t comment any further at this time.”
Interim Leadership and Council Stability
In the wake of Laing’s departure, Eric Drysdale, the deputy leader of the council, will serve as the interim leader until a new appointment is made on October 29, 2025. Drysdale expressed his surprise at Laing’s decision, noting that all councillors will need to work diligently to fill the leadership void. He stated, “Grant has given his all in the role of leader of Perth and Kinross Council for the last three and a half years, driven by his wholehearted commitment to our group’s core principles.”
Drysdale also emphasized the importance of stability during this transitional period, saying, “These are very serious matters and it is right that due process takes its course. My priority as acting leader is to ensure stability and continuity for the Council, its staff, and the communities we serve.”
A council spokesperson confirmed Laing’s resignation and clarified that he will continue to fulfill his duties as an independent councillor. They stated, “Councillor Grant Laing has notified us of his resignation as council leader for personal reasons.”
Police Investigation and Next Steps
According to Police Scotland, Laing has been charged with embezzlement, with the alleged offences taking place in the Perth area over several years. A report detailing the charges will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal, who will determine the next steps in the legal process.
As the situation develops, the council is preparing for a change in leadership. The next meeting of the full council is scheduled for October 29, 2025, where a new leader will be officially confirmed, along with any necessary changes to committee appointments.
The circumstances surrounding Laing’s resignation and the ongoing investigation have raised questions about governance and accountability within local political structures. As the council navigates this challenging period, local communities are urged to remain focused on the essential services that the council provides.
