California Education Department Forms AI Workgroup to Shape Future

The California Department of Education (CDE) has initiated a statewide workgroup focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into K-12 public schools. This effort, guided by state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, follows the passage of legislation in 2024 that mandates a comprehensive approach to AI in education. California now positions itself as one of the first states to adopt such a legislative framework.

In a recent statement, Thurmond emphasized the importance of providing “clear direction on AI use in schools to ensure technology enhances — rather than replaces — the vital role of educators.” The workgroup, which held its inaugural meeting on August 29 at CDE headquarters in Sacramento, includes a diverse range of members, primarily educators, but also students, administrators, classified staff, representatives from higher education, and industry experts.

The legislation, authored by Sen. Josh Becker and co-sponsored by Thurmond, stipulates that at least half of the workgroup’s members must be current classroom teachers. This requirement aims to ensure that the perspectives of educators significantly influence policy development. “We want to ensure that those who will be affected by this guidance and policy have a voice in creating it,” Thurmond noted in a public statement.

Key Objectives and Timeline

The workgroup’s primary goal is to develop guidance and a model policy for the use of AI in schools and districts throughout California. According to the legislation, the workgroup is tasked with several key actions. Its first set of recommendations must be issued by January 1, 2026, followed by a comprehensive model policy by July 1, 2026. A final report is due to the Legislature in early 2027, and the statute governing the workgroup will dissolve in 2031.
