Devon Dentist Introduces Groundbreaking Airway Protocol for Patients
A dentist in Totnes, England, is pioneering a new approach to patient care that she believes could significantly impact the field of dentistry and general medicine. Dr. Kalina Borska, the owner of Venus Dental, has developed the Borska Airway Protocol to treat conditions such as sleep apnoea, teeth grinding, and jaw pain. Her innovative methods have garnered attention internationally, as she aims to bridge the gap between dentistry and general health.
Dr. Borska, originally from Poland, chose to settle in Totnes, a town that she finds inspiring due to its historical significance. It was the educational home of Victorian innovator Charles Babbage and the birthplace of the tablet press, invented by William Brokedon in 1843. Her passion for airway dentistry emerged during her tenure at the practice, where she was introduced to the field of dental sleep medicine by Dr. Steven Olmos.
The protocol she has formulated focuses on holistic care, addressing not just dental issues but also providing solutions for broader health concerns. Dr. Borska explains that her method has shown unexpected benefits, alleviating not only dental discomfort but also issues such as back pain and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
“Through my work, I realised that something very important had taken place,” Dr. Borska stated. “The whole body benefitted in a way I never anticipated. My patients have graciously allowed me to share their journeys, and I hope this will reach others who suffer similarly.”
In her mission to integrate this protocol into medical education, Dr. Borska has published her first textbook, The Borska Airway Protocol, aimed at dental and medical professionals. She emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of how airway issues can affect overall health, advocating for its inclusion in both dental and medical school curricula.
“I want this to be a standard part of the curriculum,” she said. “I’m dedicating my life to trying to make this happen.”
Dr. Borska’s approach reflects her belief in treating patients as whole individuals rather than targeting only specific symptoms. She has transformed her dental practice into a welcoming space that showcases local artists’ work, promoting a healing environment. “There’s more than one way of putting a smile on people’s faces,” she remarked. “I do it in the surgery, physically, but I also do it in the waiting room.”
Her journey into dentistry stemmed from an initial interest in architecture. However, her fascination with human anatomy and the mechanics of the body led her to pursue a career in dentistry. Despite facing challenges, including dyslexia, Dr. Borska’s determination has propelled her to success.
“Believe it or not, here we are, and I have now written a book which simply proves that if there’s a will, there’s a way,” she concluded.
As she continues to expand her influence in the field, Dr. Borska represents a new wave of dental professionals who recognize the interconnectedness of oral health and overall well-being. Her innovative methods and commitment to patient care may indeed pave the way for a transformative approach to health in the years to come.
