Former Apple Employee Questions Value of New iPhone Air
Apple launched its new iPhone 17 lineup on September 19, 2023, featuring a range of innovative models, including the much-anticipated iPhone Air. While many consumers are eager to explore the latest offerings, a former Apple employee is raising questions about the value of the iPhone Air compared to its more robust counterparts.
Tyler Morgan, who previously worked at Apple and now shares technology insights on social media, expressed skepticism about the iPhone Air’s appeal in a recent TikTok video. He stated that there is “no reason” for consumers to consider purchasing the iPhone Air, describing it as merely a stripped-down version of the iPhone 17.
According to Morgan, the iPhone Air lacks several key features that set the iPhone 17 apart. “It’s literally just the 17 with one less camera, a Pro chip, because they have to have a reason to charge you £999,” he remarked, highlighting the similarities between the two models. He noted that the iPhone Air has a “worse battery” and does not support USB 3. Furthermore, he criticized the wireless charging capabilities, stating that the Air only supports charging up to 20 watts, while the base model can manage 25 watts.
Morgan’s comments suggest that the iPhone Air may cater primarily to those who wish to showcase a new device rather than offering significant technological advancements. He advised prospective buyers to invest in the iPhone 17 Pro Max instead. Although it comes at a higher price of £1,199, the Pro Max features a larger 6.9-inch display, a more substantial battery, and additional camera capabilities.
Apple’s official website supports Morgan’s claims, emphasizing that the iPhone Air boasts an “impossibly thin and light design” with a respectable battery life of 27 hours for video playback. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro Max provides up to 37 hours, catering to users who demand extended usage. The Pro Max model also includes two extra cameras, including an Ultra Wide 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera, which enhances the overall photographic experience.
For those who prioritize storage, the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers up to 2TB of space, doubling the 1TB available in the iPhone Air. This makes it a more appealing option for photography enthusiasts and content creators requiring ample storage for their work.
While some Apple fans have expressed excitement about the new aluminium design and improved camera features of the iPhone 17, the iPhone Air maintains a sleek, premium appearance that may attract a different consumer segment. As the complete iPhone lineup becomes available, the market will determine whether Morgan’s assessments resonate with potential buyers.
With the new models now on sale, consumers face choices that extend beyond the simple allure of a new device, challenging them to consider functionality, performance, and overall value in their purchasing decisions.
