UK Launches Campaign to Strengthen Research Ties with Spain and Germany

The UK government has initiated an international campaign aimed at enhancing research partnerships with Spain and Germany through the Horizon Europe programme. This initiative focuses on showcasing the advantages of collaboration with UK researchers, universities, and businesses, positioning the UK as a key player in global research and innovation.
Strengthening Ties Through Horizon Europe
Horizon Europe, which operates until 2027 with a budget exceeding £82 billion (€95.5 billion), is designed to foster international research collaboration to tackle pressing global challenges. By engaging in this programme, UK organisations unlock substantial funding opportunities and collaborate with prestigious partners across Europe and beyond. The new campaign reflects the UK’s broader strategy to enhance international partnerships and stimulate economic growth through innovation, as outlined in its Plan for Change. Spain and Germany are identified as crucial allies in this endeavour, given their robust research and development sectors.
Highlighting Successful Collaborations
A prominent example of effective collaboration under Horizon funding is the ESCALATE project. This initiative, stemming from Horizon Europe’s predecessor programme, united UK, Spanish, and German partners to develop cost-effective electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The project, valued at £19 million (€22 million), featured Yorkshire-based Electra Commercial Vehicles working alongside Spain’s Primafrio Corporation and Germany’s RWTH Aachen University. Their joint efforts resulted in significant advancements in modular electric vehicle design and battery technology, paving the way for new commercial prospects in the electric transportation sector.
The campaign aims to leverage the UK’s impressive record in scientific research. In June 2025, the UK secured 56 European Research Council Advanced Grants, worth approximately £120 million (€140 million), more than any other nation. These grants support impactful projects across diverse fields, including healthcare and artificial intelligence. With its distinguished universities and high number of Nobel laureates, the UK is well-equipped to offer substantial value to research consortia throughout Europe.
To facilitate connections among researchers and businesses, the campaign will feature a series of networking events throughout 2025. These gatherings aim to foster partnerships and enhance access to Horizon Europe’s opportunities. Moreover, grants will be provided to assist UK businesses in covering expenses related to attending European research and development events, reinforcing efforts to increase UK participation in Horizon Europe.
Support for researchers is also available through the Horizon Hub, managed by Innovate UK and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). This platform provides practical guidance on funding calls, application processes, and connections with Horizon experts and National Contact Points.
The campaign coincides with the visit of Spain’s Prime Minister to London, marking a significant moment that underscores the importance of international cooperation. By showcasing real-world success stories and offering practical collaboration tools, the UK aspires to deepen its scientific connections with European partners, fostering long-term growth in high-potential industries.
